Hey there! @mac-martin, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you would like to know if you can charge you phone using USB-C charger supplied with your laptop.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your laptop or phone?

I have checked the specifications of your laptop and smartphone. You can use a regular USB-C cable to charge your smartphone.

But you cannot use an adapter to charge your smartphone. As the power outage from the adapter would be more that the USB-C cable.

Please provide the product number of your PC so I can get you accurate information.

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care! 🙂

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The laptop is HP specter x360 - 13-ac003TU/1DF84PA#ABG.

The Charger's output voltage and current details as printed on its outer case are as follows:

5V - 3.00A/9V - 3.00A/10V - 5.00A/12V - 5.00A/15V - 4.33A/20V - 3.25A. The USBC cable is permanently attached to the charger.

As far as I understand the whoe idea behind the USB-C charging is device universality, meaning that the power requirenments of a device are negotiated with the charger. Theoreticaly this should enable the above mentioned charger to work with the phone. This is the theory though. Please provide the practical advice.

Cheers

@mac-martin, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I have checked the specifications of your laptop.

The power adapter shipped with your PC is a 65W USB C adapter.

Since the power outage from the adapter is 65W. I would not suggest you charge a smartphone.

A smartphone only needs 3.68 watts of power from the outlet while it's charging and 2.24 watts when charged.

Refer the product specification page for more information.

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care 🙂

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

First of all I have to disagree with your analysis of power ratings of chargers or any other power supplies for that matter.

I is not the charger that "outputs" 65W, it is that the charger is capable of supplying maximum 65W of power. The power required is drawn by the device and the device can draw from 0 to the maximum 65W for the charger in question.

Please focus on the secon paragraph of my previous message and in particular the ability of USB-C chargers to negotiate voltages and currents.

I believe that the charger supplied with my notebook is of the universal type (either X7W50AA or 1HE08AA) , capable of supplying all of the voltage and current combinations mentioned in my previous post. The question is if the HP elite x3 phone is capable of negotiating correct voltage/current combination with the charger.

With all due respect I would like my question to be referred to somwone with the engeneering expertise.

Kind regards.
