HP 24x gaming display

Hi everybody,

Setup:

I use my 24x display's dvi and hdmi entrances simultaneously - one to connect a docking station, one to connect my desktop pc.

Sometimes I disconnect the hdmi cable to connect my PS3 via hdmi.

Problem:

Every time I change the source (by turning the desktop off and the notebook on, or by connecting the PS3 hdmi cable instead of the desktop), audio doesn't work anymore. Turning the display off doesn't solve the problem.

Disconnecting the power source is the only solution that works. That annoys me,

Any ideas to fix this?

Thx,

Björn

@PolarBjoern, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand how frustrating it can be to lose audio every time you switch input sources on your HP 24x Gaming Display. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this issue.

When switching between HDMI sources (Desktop, Docking Station, PS3), the display loses audio output. Power cycling the monitor (unplugging it) temporarily restores audio.

Recommended Steps

Check HDMI Audio Settings on Each Device

  • Ensure that the device you're switching to (e.g., PS3, laptop, desktop) is set to output audio via HDMI.
  • On Windows:
    • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → SoundsPlayback tab.
    • Select the HP 24x Display (HDMI) as the default audio device.

Update Monitor Firmware (if available)

  • HP occasionally releases firmware updates for displays to fix HDMI handshake and audio issues.
  • Visit the HP support page for your monitor: Official HP® Support

Use HDMI Only for Audio-Capable Devices

  • The DVI port does not carry audio, so ensure only HDMI is used for devices where audio is expected.
  • If you're using a docking station via DVI, audio must be routed separately (e.g., via 3.5mm jack or USB audio).

Try a Different HDMI Cable

  • Faulty or low-quality HDMI cables can cause handshake issues, especially when switching sources.
  • Use a certified High-Speed HDMI cable.

Perform a Monitor Reset

  • Unplug the monitor from power.
  • Hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  • Reconnect and power on.
  • This clears any residual state that may be causing audio issues.

Use a Powered HDMI Switch (Optional)

  • If switching frequently between devices, consider using a powered HDMI switch with audio passthrough. This can help maintain a stable HDMI handshake.

Why This Happens

The issue is likely due to how the monitor handles HDMI handshake and EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) when switching sources. Some devices may not reinitialize audio properly unless the monitor is fully power-cycled.

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
