Hi @Black37
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It looks like you're dealing with two separate but related issues:
- User Profile Service Failed the Sign-In (Black Screen Error)
- Startup Settings Not Working (Error Code 0xc0000098)
Fix User Profile Service Failed the Sign-In
This error usually happens due to a corrupted user profile or missing system files. Try these steps:
Boot into Safe Mode
- Restart your PC and hold Shift while clicking Restart.
- Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Choose Safe Mode with Networking and log in.
Run System File Checker (SFC) & DISM
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator (Win + R, type cmd, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter).
- Run the following commands one by one:sfc /scannow DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Restart your PC after the scan completes.
Create a New User Profile
- If Safe Mode works, create a new user account:
- Open Command Prompt and type:net user NewUser /add
- Restart and log in with the new account.
Fix Error Code 0xc0000098 (Startup Issue)
This error indicates a corrupt Boot Configuration Data (BCD). Try these steps:
Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD)
- Boot into Advanced Startup (hold Shift while clicking Restart).
- Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt.
- Run these commands one by one:bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /scanos bootrec /rebuildbcd
- Restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.
Use Startup Repair
- In Advanced Startup, select Startup Repair and follow the prompts.
If these steps don’t work, you may need to perform a system restore or reinstall Windows.
Let me know how it goes—you're handling this issue with great patience! 🚀
