After a recent BIOS update (installed via HP app), my desktop with an RTX 5090 sometimes crashes right after starting a game. The screen goes black and all fans, including GPU fans, ramp up to full speed. The PC stays on but is unresponsive until I force restart. After restarting, everything works fine. This happens rarely and only during gaming. Do you know what could cause this issue, and if it might be related to the latest BIOS update?

Just to update — the issue wasn’t hardware related. It turned out to be a BIOS and NVIDIA driver conflict.

I completely cleaned the GPU drivers using DDU in Safe Mode, then reinstalled them manually. After that, I also rolled back the BIOS via the official HP Support Assistant tool (not manually).

Once I reverted to the previous BIOS version, the random restarts and Kernel-Power (ID 41) critical errors stopped entirely. The system is now fully stable under stress tests (OCCT – CPU, GPU, PSU, memory).

⚠️ Heads-up: the newest HP BIOS update can cause instability with recent NVIDIA drivers (especially RTX 50-series). I’d strongly recommend avoiding it until HP releases a fixed version.

I haven’t yet tested the very latest NVIDIA driver with the older BIOS, but the rollback version works perfectly.

Hopefully this helps others before they assume a hardware fault.

Well, BIOS updates can, sometimes, do more harm than good.

 

It's typically fairly difficult to do HP consumer PC BIOS rollbacks. A HP BIOS rollback can be done in most cases. But it's a PITA.

 

I would tend to think your PC now has a component stability problem. And the component issue could be caused by the recent BIOS update or the component problem could be coincidental.

 

Download and run OCCT (free) available at this Site to see if you can pinpoint what component is in trouble.

 

Using OCCT you can check: the CPU, the graphics card, and memory. A buggy power supply can cause the PC symptom you are now experiencing.

 

I use OCCT on all new PC builds to check system stability.

That's interesting. You were able to roll back the BIOS using HP Support Assistant.

 

HP must have changed its BIOS rollback policy. Previously, doing a BIOS rollback on a HP consumer PC was very difficult.

 

It's good to see your PC is back in business.

I have the exact same problem, but it's been going on for quite some time now. Which BIOS are you using? And which Nvidia driver are you using? Did that completely solve the problem for you?

Your issue is identicle to my one. Updates from early November broke my pc. Black screens a few minutes after first boot, restarts and then fine for rest of the night or day. I did the bios roll-back then driver for graphics deleted with same app as you reinstalled the latest with a clean install  the newest one for b07 unless I needed to g9 back a driver but im full time cod and current nvidia driver is for cod. Only difference im on a 4090 14900k. I've now roll-back the gaming sdk package and will see. Kinda hate pc gaming the master race never mentioned how buggy glitchy inconsistency crash filled hot mess a pc is.

so im experiencing this on my 4090 14900k hp omen. i did what you did no fix, rolledback omen gaming hub sdk and i got 2 days clean runs then back today, i just re read your post, you didnt use the latest nvida driver? because i redownloaded the latest becuase it mentioned it was for black ops 7 what i wanted to play...  maby i need to go back with the nvida driver aswell.

Hi, I am honestly extremely disappointed and frustrated at this point.
My Level-2 support case has now been open for 20 days without a single response, despite multiple escalations through phone support, live chat, WhatsApp, HP Store support and even HP Facebook support.

Until now, I have always had very good experiences with HP and even recommended the brand to others — but after this situation, I have to say that I will most likely switch to another manufacturer in the future.

I own an additional HP Care Pack which promises prioritized support, yet nothing is happening.
My Omen system has reproducible hardware issues (WHEA 17/18 errors, black screens, fans ramping to 100%), and I am completely stuck with no updates from HP.

This is absolutely unacceptable, and I hope someone from HP will finally take responsibility for this case

I finally got the issue under controller for more then 24 - 48 hours. Nvidia driver version 581.94 emergency fix addressed black screens, caused by the latest windows uodate. I did it and still expernced the issue so I went back to core isolation in the start menue and turned off kernel mode hardwear enforcement stack protection as for some people that was there first fix. The turnoff enforcement didnt help until I had the nvidia fix and seting off. Also before this I wiped my pc, rolled forward back eveything etc the last 2 steps where then together. I also rolled back a windows update 2 caused the issue I could only roll back the second one. My black screen issues are gone. Felt comfortable after 2 weeks to update windows again now the update fails and hp support app fr updates dont open. So windows still cooking people's **bleep**... it was hell mate I was about to guve uo on pc and go back to a ps5 I was that upset windows and Microsoft was killing the last of the xbox audience.
