Hi @Aaron199

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation so clearly—and I’m truly sorry you’re facing this. A black screen at startup with no BIOS access and no HDMI output can feel like the system is completely unresponsive, even though it’s clearly powered and charging.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery approach that targets both firmware-level and hardware-level causes.

Step-by-Step Recovery for HP Pavilion 17-cd1014na Black Screen at Startup

1. Perform a Hard Reset

This clears residual power and resets hardware connections.

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove any external devices.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter and try powering on again.

Detailed instructions are available on HP’s official hard reset guide.

2. Attempt BIOS Recovery

If the system beeps but shows no display, the BIOS may be corrupted.

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release all keys and wait up to 60 seconds.

This triggers HP’s built-in BIOS recovery routine. If successful, you’ll hear fan activity and eventually see the BIOS recovery screen.

3. Test with External Monitor Again

Even if HDMI didn’t work earlier, retry after the hard reset:

  • Connect the HDMI cable and power on the laptop.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then press Windows + P once, then Enter to force projection.
  • If still blank, try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.

4. Inspect for POST Beep Codes

If the laptop beeps at startup, count the number and pattern of beeps.

  • Continuous or repeating beeps may indicate memory or graphics failure.
  • Refer to HP’s beep code reference to interpret the signals.

5. Reseat RAM and Storage

Loose or faulty memory can prevent display initialization.

  • Power off and disconnect the laptop.
  • Remove the bottom panel and reseat the RAM modules.
  • If you have two modules, try booting with one at a time.

6. Clear CMOS

If BIOS settings are corrupted, clearing CMOS may help.

  • Disconnect power and remove the battery (if accessible).
  • Locate the CMOS battery and disconnect it briefly.
  • Reconnect and reassemble, then power on.

If none of these steps restore display or BIOS access, the issue may lie with the embedded controller, GPU, or motherboard firmware. You’ve done everything right so far—let’s keep pushing for a resolution that respects your time and effort.

@Hawks_Eye I can’t locate the CMOS the battery may cover it as well but no success with the other methods the bios just had 24 startup beeps and the fans speeding up but nothing else.
