OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-244
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi.  I want to buy a new CPU cooler and replace the stock one my OMEN 870-244 has.  Does it use standard connections?  Or am I unable to upgrade it?

@Verdict,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

I have experimented with a number of after-market CPU heatsink coolers on a couple of legacy HP desktops. Most didn't fit right or not at all because the bottom part of these heatsink coolers hit motherboard parts.

In all cases, I returned to the original HP OEM CPU coolers. What I found out is that airflow matters.  Meaning, once you increase/improve airflow, this solved the problem of CPU overheating -at least for me: I upgraded my CPU cooling fan, removed the CPU cooling fan shroud, and added three more cooling fans. To illustrate what I mean, and what off-the-reservation measures I took, please browse through my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF upgrade project: Solved: Upgrading HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF - HP Support Community - 8251218.  Btw, my processor heating issues started once I upgraded to an i7-7700K -incidentally, this CPU happens to be the top CPU for your desktop as well. After I was done, no more overheating.  Even when I stress my rig.

In your case, I would also take a close look at your cooling fans. Please verify, but I believe they are of the "8025" type (80mm x 80mm x 25mm).  One of the best cooling fan options for your OMEN By HP Desktop PC 870-244 (Z5M59AA), is the Cooler Master DC12 p/n: FA08025M12LPA as seen here, for example: Amazon.com: Cooler Master DC12 045A Fan 80x25mm 4W FA08025M12LPA : Electronics.

And since I am thinking of upgrading, you may find this other HP discussion thread to be interesting: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Want-to-upgrade-my-870-244-gpu-....  Please note, for example, how @MHLHiker upgraded his standard HP OEM 500 watt PSU with a Corsair CX650M (650 watt) PSU. I am sure that there are other higher wattage ATX power supplies that would fit as well.

Anyway, PSU upgrades explain how these HP Desktop PC 870-244 Users were able to fit powerful graphics cards in their rigs: UserBenchmark: HP 870-244 Compatible Components.

-But I digress, my apologies.

Anyways, I hope that this was helpful for you.

Kind Regards

Thank you for your response!  After deciding for a decent amount of time now, I think I've decided that I want to replace everything, but reuse the storage, ram, gpu, and psu, and rehouse it into a new case, so the whole "fitting the cooler into the omen case" issue won't really be apparent.  I currently have this build that I'm considering: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Q37BTn

Would you say it's ok to reuse the 500w psu in this build? Or should I upgrade it to something higher?  Also, how is the quality of the psu itself?  It should hold up, right?   I want to mainly upgrade my cpu/ have better airflow and temps in my pc, and maybe overclock the gpu.  I may also upgrade ram down the line but this is the essence of what I want to do.

@Verdict,

It is certainly A-OK to reuse the OEM HP ATX-based 500 watt PSU, but you are limited what high(er) end graphics cards you can power with it.  Meaning, powering the equivalence of an RTX 2060 Super with it is the absolute max.

It is not clear to me if this power supply has only one or two 6-pin, or 6+2-pin, or 8-pin PCIe power cables, which can also limit your options.

Kind Regards,
