Hi @Majorbearclaw,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be trying to reset your login PIN, only to find that your mouse and keyboard aren’t working in the startup settings. It’s like being locked out of your own space with no way to reach the keys.

Let’s walk through this gently and get you back in control.

Steps to Change Your Login PIN When Input Devices Don’t Work in Startup

1. Try Different USB Ports

  • Plug your wired mouse and keyboard into USB 2.0 ports (usually black) instead of USB 3.0 (blue).
  • Avoid using USB hubs or extension cables.

2. Enable Legacy USB Support in BIOS

If your keyboard/mouse doesn’t work in startup settings, it may be because Legacy USB Support is disabled.

Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Turn off your PC completely.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  3. Navigate to Advanced > USB Configuration.
  4. Look for Legacy USB Support and enable it.
  5. Save changes and exit.

If you can’t access BIOS due to input issues, try using a different keyboard (preferably an older or basic wired models).

3. Use On-Screen Keyboard Temporarily

Once in Windows:

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
  • Turn on the On-Screen Keyboard to enter your PIN or password.

4. Reset PIN via Account Settings

If you’re logged in and want to reset your PIN:

  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options
  • Under PIN (Windows Hello), click Remove, then Set up a new PIN
