Hello good people! I, like many others here, am looking for some upgrade advice.

 

I bought a HP Omen 870-230ng a few years ago and have managed well with what came with it (well, I did upgrade to 16GB of RAM) but now I would like to get a new GPU as the 1050 2GB just doesn't cut it anymore.

 

So I am looking for advice on what I could upgrade to, as in what would fit in this machine. I am also aware that the existing 300w PSU may also need to be upgraded in order to power any new GPU, so advice there would also be greatly appreciated.

What card did you have in mind. Name an  intense game. OK.  Either way, you need a new PSU in the 550W-600W range, maybe even a 650W.    (prices vary, a 600W might be less than a 550W). I would like to recommend a Corsair PSU.

Your GTX 1050 is only 5.7".  Every manufacturer has their own build, so the specifications might will vary.  You should have more length available.  Once you have chosen the new card, the procedure is straight forward.

Before you shutdown the computer, be sure to uninstall all software and drivers for the old card.

Basic on replacing Power Supply

1) Disconnect the power cord from the computer. Remove side panel.

2) Swap out the cards.Make sure you connect the required power plugs to the new card, and the video cable.

3)  Replace side panel. Re-connect the power cord from the computer. 

4)  Re-boot unit, and install new card software.  Screen will look lousy until you install software.

Hi @Wb2001,

 

many thanks for the reply. I was looking at perhaps a GTX1660 (also 5.7"), but the Nvidia website mentions the required PSU, and for something like this a 500W is indeed required.

 

I know how to change a GPU, I am not too worried about that, but my biggest issue was on how to change a PSU, so thank you for that link!

 

The only other thing I am now unsure on is how to ensure that a new PSU will actually fit and be compatible.

GTX 1660 and all the way to RTX2060 can run comfortably on a stock HP/Dell/Lenovo 310-400W PSUs. All tested without any issues.

 

But to be specific with your configuration, the 1660 will work with your stock 300W psu, that is of course if you have an 8pin PCI-E power cable coming out of it, which I think you do not. You can upgrade the PSU or get a SATA to PCI-e adapter (around $8) and get it going.

Thanks for your answer.

 

I decided to go for a Corsair 600W PSU and for the 1660. That way I have more power than I need for now, and can enjoy a better GPU for a lower cost. The 1050 did me well for 3 years, so anything will be a bonus 😄

 

The PSU should arrive today, so hopefully it fits and I can install it without any problems. Only time will tell.

Thanks! I received the PSU today (Corsair RM650x) and installed it and all seems well. The only issue is that my DVD drive has a mini SATA so I need to get an adaptor for that.

Will let you know about the GPU.
