OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-244
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Our gaming desktop is overheating while just browsing on google chrome. I have the fans kicked up to max with afterburner.  This computer should be running overwatch, RDR2, and any other games without any issues. I applied thermal paste, in case the factory wasn't that great. As soon as it hits 91*C it locks up. What parts do I need to make this POS work again? Do I need a different heatsink, an air conditioner, what?  I'm very close to a Microcenter (nerd heaven) store. Thank you for any suggestions. I know this is community advice, & I appreciate all of you.

@yagwit77,

The heat issues that you described could be caused by dust buildup on the CPU heatsink, fans and other components. If you haven't done so already, please use compressed canned air to blow the dust out of the case.

Here is a link that will show you how to more thoroughly clean the inside of your Omen Desktop:

Hope this is helpful.

@yagwit77 , welcome to the Community.

We thank you for the recognition!  It is greatly appreciated by all who help here.

The first thing that I will suggest is doing a thorough cleaning inside of the case and out.  Make certain that you pay particular attention to the fan/s and vents.  The computer is going on 5 years old.  All of the components are in their waning years.  A new heatsink and fan would probably be a good addition, as well.  You should check with Noctua to see what they have available for your processor.  Also, an additional case fan could help if there is room for it.  Here is a video to help you with assuring that you keep the case air pressure correct when adding fans.  The last suggestion is to do a complete system reset if you haven't done so recently.  If it doesn't help the heating problem it will at least make the computer run faster and smoother.  I do this at least once per year.

@old_geekster,

Another dynamic at play here -and I looked at a number of identical Forum discussions, is that there are well documented issues regarding the less-capable cooling capabilities of these PCs.  Like you suggested, the only real solutions are to modify the cooling system (add or replace cooling fan(s) &/or install a liquid CPU cooling system, etc.) or to move the computer components into a different case with improved (positive) air cooling capabilities.

Best Wishes,

@NonSequitur777, great points!  It is getting more and more difficult to cool computers with smaller cases as the components get more powerful.  It is going to become necessary to begin using liquid cooling on all gaming computers.  My gaming computer has a full size case with liquid cooling and it runs relatively cool with 6 fans, 3-120mm and 3-140mm.
