Trying to boot up my HP Omen 40L and it’s stuck on a black screen. The HP logo pops up first and then goes to a black screen where the loading wheel cursor from the mouse is only visible.

Greetings @Jentwisle504

Welcome to the HP Forum.

Your PC may have a hardware problem or Windows is corrupted.

Check your PC's hardware, if this is possible, by using HP Diagnostics as follows:

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap the "ESC" key.

Select "F2". Run extensive system and component tests to confirm: a drive problem, a memory problem, or other component problem.

Let the Forum know if your PC can run HP's hardware tests at startup.

Fixing corrupted Windows boot files is a hit and miss proposition.

I hope you are routinely backing up data. You may have to reinstall Windows.

I can try to provide a way to get to the WinRE if hardware tests pass. You might be able to do a system restore or try other fixes using WinRE. Fixing a corrupted Windows Registry would not be possible.

There is a YouTube video available showing how to fix a corrupted Windows GPT Boot Manager if this is your PC's problem.

Let the Forum know if hardware tests pass.

I appreciate it and thank you for the help! I ran all the diagnostics tests and everything passed. I ended up just doing a reset and reinstalling window. Do you think a recent driver install/update could have caused this? Also, at one point i did receive a CMOS error. Time and date were correct on the BIOS screen so I didn’t think anything was wrong with it. Could it still have been the CMOS battery that caused the original problem?

Greetings @Jentwisle504

My pleasure.

Since hardware tests passed and you were able to reinstall Windows the PC should be okay.

A HP update or a Windows update could have caused this problem.

The CMOS error might have caused the problem.

Check this HP Site for CMOS error troubleshooting if your PC has a problem in the future. This second HP Site also has additional troubleshooting tips.

Regards
