Hi,I'm a first timer in using laptop, I used the power button to on and off the laptop, then it started fan spinning and and was showing blank screen.  Then it brought the BIOS system update, while at 70 it switched off. Please what can I do?

Hi @Janet_Bims,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP laptop started updating the BIOS, but it shut down at 70%, and now it shows a blank screen while the fans are spinning. This usually happens when a BIOS update is interrupted and can leave the laptop in a semi-unresponsive state. Let’s go through steps to try to recover it.

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Disconnect the laptop from the power adapter.

If removable, take out the battery.

Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to drain any residual power.

Reconnect only the power adapter and try turning it on.

2. Attempt BIOS Recovery

Most HP laptops have a built-in BIOS recovery feature:

Turn off the laptop.

Press and hold Windows key + B (or Windows + V on some models).

While holding the keys, press the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release the Power button but keep holding Windows + B.

If the system responds, you should see a BIOS recovery screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the BIOS.

3. Check for External Display

Connect the laptop to an external monitor via HDMI or DisplayPort.

This ensures the blank screen isn’t just a display issue.

4. Avoid Interrupting Power

While the BIOS recovery or update is in progress, do not unplug the power adapter.

Interrupting the process can permanently damage the motherboard.

Avoid attempting repeated power cycles as it can worsen the issue.

I hope this helps.
