Pc ran fine until about 2am it badly wanted to undate, it acted like the kids in the car asking (are we there yet). After update stuck at black screen, so force shutdown. Boot up two, login and syuck at please wait. Force shutdown again  F11 using recovery and making attemp to turn updates off to prevent issues until a solution is found.

I hate updates i suppose Vista was a taste of the future for Microsoft with its request to give permission to do anything.

Hey there! @Ihateupdates, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you get a black screen after the latest windows update on your PC.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any hardware or software changes on your PC?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

To recover from the RS4 upgrade hang:

Hold the power button down for a few seconds to force the notebook to power off.
Power on the notebook and boot to Windows. Windows may go through an improper shutdown check and will rollback the RS4 upgrade after the failure.

To successfully upgrade to RS4, take one of the following actions:

Disconnect USB-C or Thunderbolt device from notebook prior to final restart to complete the upgrade process.

Update Thunderbolt Host Controller firmware prior to initiating the RS4 upgrade process.

Try the steps recommended below.

If you are able to boot into BIOS try restoring the BIOS to default on your PC and check if it helps.

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Some PCs may need a long time to download Windows 10, depending on the quality of the internet connection, the amount of data to move and the computer’s speed.  In some cases, it may take as long as 24 hours, so please be patient.  If your hard drive is still flashing, there’s a good chance it is still making progress.

From the WinX Menu, open Command Prompt (Admin). Type the following one after the other and hit Enter:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

Next browse to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete all the files and folders inside. Press Ctrl+A to Select All and then Delete.

If the files are in use, and you are unable to delete some files, restart your device. After rebooting, run the above commands again. Now you will be able to delete the files from the mentioned Software Distribution folder.

After you have emptied this folder, you may restart your computer or you may type the following commands one at a time in the CMD, and hit Enter to restart the Windows Update related Services.

net start wuauserv
net start bits

Run Windows Update again and see.

You will be able to download and install the updates successfully. Once done, you will see that a restart has also been scheduled.
