HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-ec1073dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My computer works fine until I take out the charger, and put it back in that is 150 watts. Once I take out the charger and put it back in, the computer lags and runs slow. When I take the charger back out, the computer runs smoothly. If I wait a day or two, the computer will run smoothly on the charger again. But this time, since a week ago, the computer has still been slow. I’ve already run driver and hardware tests to see if anything was wrong, and it didn’t tell me anything was wrong. This is an issue that’s been happening for a few months now. Restarting it or shutting it down will not help with the lag. I always prefer to keep it on the charger because the battery runs down pretty fast without it. I’ve also already tried looking through community posts, and I tried messing around with the battery system, but it didn’t really change anything much at all. It would be very appreciated if I could get help for this, so that I can use my laptop again. Thank you.

Hi @Helaina_Taylor,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop has been consistently slow despite running driver and hardware tests and restarting or shutting it down doesn't help with the lag, there could be several reasons behind this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take.

  • Check Task Manager: Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check which processes or applications are using the most resources (CPU, memory, disk, etc.). This might help identify if any specific software is causing the slowdown.
  • Disk Cleanup: Over time, temporary files, cache, and other unnecessary data can accumulate on your system, affecting its performance. Use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to remove these files and free up disk space.
  • Malware Scan: Run a thorough malware scan using a reliable antivirus or anti-malware software. Malware can significantly slow down your computer's performance.
  • Software Updates: Make sure your operating system, drivers, and software are up to date. Outdated software can sometimes lead to compatibility issues and performance problems.
  • Background Applications: Some applications run in the background and consume system resources. Check your system tray for unnecessary applications and close or disable them if they are not needed.
  • Startup Programs: Disable or limit the number of programs that start automatically when your computer boots up. This can improve boot times and overall performance.
  • Hard Drive Health: If your laptop has a traditional hard drive (HDD), it might be worth checking its health using tools like CrystalDiskInfo. A failing hard drive can cause slowdowns.
  • Resource-Hungry Software: Some applications or games can be particularly resource-intensive. If you're running demanding software, it's normal for your laptop to experience slowdowns.
  • Driver Updates: Even if your tests didn't indicate any issues, sometimes updating specific drivers (graphics, chipset, etc.) can resolve performance problems.
  • Check for Overheating: Overheating can lead to performance throttling. Make sure your laptop is well-ventilated, and consider using a cooling pad.
  • Reset or Reinstall: If none of the above steps work, you might consider resetting your laptop to its factory settings or performing a clean reinstall of the operating system. Remember to back up your important data before doing this.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
