@Sethiram1, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop won’t turn on unless the charger is plugged in — even though the battery is fully charged — this usually points to one of these common issues:
Possible Causes:
- Battery Health Issue: The battery might show 100% but is not supplying enough power to boot the system.
- BIOS or EC Firmware Problem: The Embedded Controller (EC) or BIOS could be misreporting battery status or controlling power flow incorrectly.
- Motherboard/Power Circuit Fault: A damaged power delivery component (like the MOSFET, power IC, or charging circuit) might prevent the system from drawing power from the battery.
- Battery Not Detected Properly: Windows or BIOS may not be detecting the battery correctly, causing the system to default to AC power.
Recommended Steps:
Step 1: Basic Battery Reset
- Turn off the laptop.
- Unplug the charger.
- Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds.
- Plug the charger back in and try booting without powering it on first.
- Now unplug the charger and try booting on battery only.
Step 2: Check Battery Status in BIOS
- Turn on your laptop and immediately start pressing F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
- Check if the battery is detected and shows a charge level.
- If the battery status shows "unknown" or "0%", that's a red flag.
Step 3: Update BIOS
- If your battery is detected but the system still won't boot without AC:
- Download and install the latest BIOS update for your HP model from the HP Support website.
Step 4: Battery Report (Windows)
- Connect the charger and boot to Windows.
- Open Command Prompt as Admin.
- Run:
powercfg /batteryreport
- Check the report in C:\Users\<YourUsername>\battery-report.html — look for:
- Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity
- Any abnormal "Last Full Charge" values.
If the battery is removable:
- Try removing the battery and cleaning the contacts gently, then reinsert it and test again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
