OMEN by HP Desktop PC 870-2XX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have an OMEN by HP Desktop PC 870-2XX, with the Odense 2-k motherboard.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/omen-by-hp-870-200/13687063/model/15217928/document/c05355651

Does anyone know if it will support i7 7700 4.2 GHz, or if 3.6 GHz is the max?

4.2 GHz is 91W TDC, so within the specs, but the datasheet explicitly states 3.6GHz as supported processor upgrade, but wondering whether this is an actual limitation, or if 4.2 GHz just wasn´t available at the time of datasheet creation

thanks!

The i7-7700 base is 3.6GHz and turbo is 4.2GHz TDP 65W

The i7-7700K base is 4.2GHz and turbo is 4.5GHz TDP 91W

I and others recommend going with a Liquid Cooling System.

It is not necessary but its worth it to help reduce temperatures.

I have yet to find the HP OEM part number for the LCS but people have used aftermarket systems.

Welcome to the HP Support Community  @Danny1D

The Spec sheets and Manuals reflect what HP sold with the systems.

It is by far not the limit of the hardware.

i7-7700K is an upgrade option and it has a 97% success rate.

Just to make sure can you provide an exact Model or Product number???

Please read my post.

It is not listed in the data/specs but it is an option.

Please look at the CPU upgrade options link.

I did read your post and think even if the 7700k works there is no realy point in taking a gamble. The cooler that is provided from factory is more than enough for a 7700 liquid cooling is a waste of power and risk. The 7700k isnt going to give you that much more vs cost to cool it plus you cant even overclock with the board so why get a k chip ? Not to mention you may need a new PSU pulling all that power

I think you misunderstand what my intent is.

It is to give as much information that is available.

Depending on the experience and $$$ it is still upto the OP to decide.

Yes the Base 4.2GHz and Turbo Boost of 4.5GHz of the i7-7700K is a minimal increase.

If the OP had the Thimphu motherboard it would gain the full benefits of the i7-7700K.

The OP asked about a CPU with 4.2GHz " if 4.2 GHz just wasn´t available at the time of datasheet creation"
