I recently just got a new Omen gaming laptop. The laptop has been working well for about a month until I started getting an issue with it. Out of no where it randomly restarts. I am simply going through the laptop then I notice it freezes for a second ultimately making the screen go black. Then It restarts itself and I'm back to the login screen. It has recently started to happen more ever since a few days ago. I don't know why this happens and I need help.

Hi @Triple984,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Random restarts can be caused by various issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the problem with your OMEN 17.3 Inch Gaming Laptop.
Check for Overheating:
- Ensure that your laptop is well-ventilated and not overheating. Dust buildup can block airflow, so consider cleaning the vents and fans.
Update Drivers:
- Make sure all your drivers, especially for the graphics card and chipset, are up-to-date. You can find the latest drivers on the HP support website or through the device manager.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure that your Windows operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, a pending update can cause instability.
Scan for Malware:
- Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to check for malware or viruses that could be causing the issue.
Run Hardware Diagnostics:
- Use the built-in HP Hardware Diagnostics tool to check for any hardware issues. You can access it by pressing Esc during startup, then selecting F2 for Diagnostics.
Check Event Viewer:
- Open Event Viewer (search for it in the Start menu) and look for any critical errors or warnings around the time of the restarts. This can provide clues about what might be causing the problem.
Examine Power Settings:
- Check your power settings to ensure there are no unusual configurations that might be causing the system to restart.
Test RAM and Storage:
- Faulty RAM or storage drives can cause instability. You can use tools like MemTest86 for RAM and the built-in Windows Check Disk tool (chkdsk) to check for errors.
Update BIOS:
- Check if there's a BIOS update available for your laptop on the HP support website. Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues.
Reset Windows:
- If the issue persists and none of the above solutions work, consider performing a Windows reset. Be sure to back up your important data before doing this.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hey AIden,
Thanks for listing all those fixes. So far I've tried pretty much all of them. My laptop isn't overheating as it is on a flat surface. My drivers all seem up to date from the looks of it. I've gotten all my windows updates up to date. I scanned for malware but there were no detections. However in the hardware diagnostics test it said everything else was ok except for the power. I don't remember what it said but it was yellow while everything else was green. My cord sometimes falls out easily and its not as tight as it should be, but it charges just fine. There was nothing on the event viewer, just a bunch of no data logs. I tweaked my power setting and it still restarted a few minutes prior to writing this. I haven't tried the ram and storage option yet. I tried updating the bios but it still happened. So now I'm left with two options. However I did discover something else about the issue when it happens. If it starts to freeze and i stop typing on the keyboard. After a second it becomes unfrozen and works fine. Whereas if I'm typing repeatedly its as if it becomes too much for it to handle and it restarts. I also just realized looking at omen utility the cpu and the gpu are between 100 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. What do I do about this?

Hi @Triple984,
Thank you for your response,
It seems like the issue may be related to power delivery or potentially a problem with the keyboard itself, especially since you mentioned that the laptop unfreezes when you stop typing. Here are some steps you can take to further diagnose and possibly fix the issue.
Power Adapter and Connection
Check the Power Adapter:
- Since you mentioned that the power cord falls out easily, try using a different compatible power adapter and see if the issue persists. An unstable power connection can cause random restarts.
Battery Health:
- Check the battery health using the HP Support Assistant or the built-in Windows battery report (powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt). If the battery is failing, it might cause instability.
Keyboard and Typing Issues
Test an External Keyboard:
- Connect an external keyboard to your laptop and see if the issue persists when typing on the external keyboard. If the problem goes away, the laptop’s keyboard might be faulty.
Keyboard Driver:
- Update or reinstall the keyboard driver from the Device Manager. Sometimes, a corrupted driver can cause issues.
Temperature and Cooling
Monitor Temperature:
- Use the Omen Command Center to monitor the temperatures while under load. Even though 100 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (about 38 to 60 degrees Celsius) is not excessively high, it's worth ensuring that the cooling system is working correctly.
Clean the Laptop:
- Ensure that the vents are not blocked and clean out any dust that might have accumulated inside the laptop. Use compressed air to clean the fans and vents.
RAM and Storage
Reseat RAM:
- Power off the laptop, remove the back panel, and reseat the RAM modules. Sometimes, loose RAM can cause instability.
Run Memory Diagnostics:
- Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool (mdsched.exe) to check for RAM issues.

Check Storage:
- Run a disk check on your storage device using chkdsk /f in Command Prompt. Additionally, use tools like CrystalDiskInfo to check the health of your SSD/HDD.
Additional Diagnostics and Settings
Event Viewer Logs:
- While you mentioned that the Event Viewer shows no significant logs, keep monitoring it for any unusual entries or patterns.
Power Settings:
- Ensure that your power plan is set to high performance, and disable any power-saving features that might be interfering with performance.
BIOS Settings:
- Check BIOS settings for power management features that might be causing issues. Sometimes, resetting BIOS to default settings can help.
By methodically going through these steps, you should be able to narrow down the cause of the random restarts and find a solution.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
