Upgrading from i5 to i7

I’m wondering if the i7-7700k will work in my omen 870-224. It currently has the i5-7400. I got this pc for a really good deal hence the reason I didn’t get the upgraded model already. The i7-7700 will work and the k version has the same socket type. I know you can’t overclock with this motherboard I just want the 7700k over the 7700 because it has higher base clock and it’s only $30 more.

I don't see why it shouldn't? Especially and if literally supported by MoBo?

Just make sure you have correct fan that will cope with additional heat - and enough spare power available in PSU (yours should be fine judging by the spec).

Hello There,

According to HP's Specs your current config can only take the i7-7700.  That being said, I've noticed that HP doesn't always post every bit of information on the capabilities of their builds online.  It may be possible to go with the i7-7700, but I would verify with the manufacturer of your motherboard before purchasing anything.  You can get your MOBO's info in a few different ways to look it up (which you may already know).

Via Comman Prompt

Start--> type cmd --> push enter --> in cmd window type, wmic baseboard get manufacturer,product,version and then push enter.

or

Open up the case and look for the product model number on the motherboard.  It can be printed almost anywhere on the board itself, but is typically the largest text that can be found.

Your information should then be displayed.  You can Google your motherboards specifications.  That will hopefully get you to the right place to lookup what its actually capable of.

The i7 7700k requires a TDP of 91watts.

Your motherboard will not support this processor.

Thank you all for the quick responses. I didn’t know that motherboards could only handle a certain wattage. I know the 7700k uses 30w more than the 7700 but did not know the motherboard could handle it. I only thought that applied to how much my power supply could handle. Looks like I will be going with the 7700 then. Thanks for all the input.

You are welcome.

Motherboard specs are tight.

An i7 7700k would not initialize if you installed this processor in your motherboard.

The landings and pins will match but your motherboard cannot supply the required CPU power draw.

Hang on chaps, you seemingly confuse two things: PC spec and MoBo spec.

You quote PC spec which merely shows that this PC is not shipped with 7700K fitted, but all other processors depending on the configuration chosen.

Based on that I think it's worth trying - however I would not be able to guarantee that it will actually work fine?

Krzemien you have a point. I didn’t notice before that they show two different TDP’s for pc specs and MoBo. I’ll dig deeper and get the part number for the motherboard and contact hp for a definite answer. If I do go with the 7700k I’m pretty sure I’ll have to upgrade my psu. I’m not sure 500w can handle an oc’d gtx 1070 and a 7700k but that’s a whole different topic.

I think you actually may be fine - or at least that's what HP thinks. 500W is a lot of power, trust me.

One of HP site specs are incorrect.

Good idea to check with HP on this.

It looks like the motherboard is good to go at a TDP of 91 watts.
