adding an SSD SATA drive to my desktop

Hi everyone,

I installed a samsung 860 EVO 1 TB SSD SATA to this computer and used the supplied SATA connection to HDD1. It is not recognizing the drive when I look up storage under system settings.  It came with a 256 GB M.2 SSD card on the motherboard. Am I missing something? Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

The new raw drive is probably offline.

Type disk management in search. Select create and format hard disk partitions from search results.

You should see the drive in offline status in Disk Management.

Right click on the new drive.

Select online.

Right click on the new drive again.

Now you can create a new simple volume.

Check disk details in the BIOS if the new drive is not present in Windows Disk Management. Reseat drive connections if the drive is not present in the BIOS.

Thank you so much for your instructions. Under disk management it shows that the new ssd is named disk 0 and it's online and set to basic and has 931.5  GB unallocated in the bottom half of the window but it is not listed  under volume in the top half of the window so I still can't access it through windows. If I right click on the disk 0, the only options I have is to convert it to a dynamic disk or MBR disk. Next step? Appreciate your help.

I wasn't right clicking on the right section of the drive. Got it done. It's now recognized. Thanks again.

Did you need an adapter to physically secure it in the slot?

I bought the tray adapter but didn’t need it. I attached the drive directly to the bay with screws.

Do you think two SSDs would fit in that bay, or just the one?

BuckskinSlim - there are 2 bays for HDDs/SSDs.
