Hi @peakbetter,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for the detailed description. The issue you're facing—black screen and monitor disconnect after 15–30 minutes of gaming—is often related to GPU overheating, driver issues, or power management settings. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot:
1. Check for Overheating
- Symptoms: Black screen after intense GPU/CPU usage.
- Fix: Use a tool like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to monitor temperatures while gaming.
- If GPU/CPU temps exceed 85–90°C, consider:
- Cleaning internal fans and vents
- Using a cooling pad
- Undervolting the GPU (advanced)
- If GPU/CPU temps exceed 85–90°C, consider:
2. Adjust Power Settings
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options
- Select High Performance or create a custom plan with:
- Minimum processor state: 100%
- PCI Express > Link State Power Management: Off
3. Disable Fullscreen Optimizations
- Right-click the game’s .exe file > Properties
- Under Compatibility, check:
- ✅ Disable fullscreen optimizations
- ✅ Run this program as an administrator
4. Check the HDMI Port and Cable
- Try a different HDMI cable and port.
- If using a discrete GPU, make sure the monitor is connected to the GPU output, not the motherboard.
5. Run a System Diagnostics Test
HP laptops have built-in diagnostics:
- Restart and press Esc repeatedly > F2 for diagnostics
- Run System Tests and Graphics Tests
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
