Hello,

I recently updated the BIOS on my HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec2xxx to the latest version. After the update, I’ve noticed a loud and concerning "grrr" noise coming from my laptop, which is quite alarming. I’m worried it might be related to the BIOS update.

I would like to roll back to the previous version of the BIOS, but unfortunately, I don’t remember the version name of the BIOS I was using before the update. Could anyone guide me on how to safely roll back to the previous BIOS version, or provide any advice on how to resolve the noise issue?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @Sunny0151d,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec2xxx is making a loud “grrr” noise after a BIOS update, and you want to roll back to the previous version. Let’s go step by step.

Identify the Source of the Noise

A “grrr” sound usually comes from fans or coil whine, not the BIOS itself.

Open HP Command Center (or BIOS hardware monitor) to check fan speeds and temperatures.

Observe if the noise changes with load (idle vs gaming).

Check BIOS Settings

Restart and press F10 to enter BIOS.

Look for Fan / Thermal settings, sometimes “CoolSense” or “Fan Always On” may have been enabled by default in the new BIOS.

Adjust settings or set to default / optimized to reduce fan noise.

Update / Reinstall Drivers

After a BIOS update, sometimes chipset, graphics, and thermal drivers may need to be reinstalled.

Go to HP Support → Drivers & Software → Enter your model → reinstall the latest chipset and Intel / AMD graphics drivers.

Rollback BIOS (Optional)

HP allows BIOS rollback if you have a previous version downloaded. Steps:

Go to HP Support → BIOS Downloads for your exact model.

Download the previous BIOS version (look for release dates before your current BIOS).

Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions carefully.

During the rollback, do not power off the laptop.

If you don’t know the previous version, check in HP Support Assistant → My devices → BIOS history, sometimes it lists the prior version.

Test Fan / Noise Behavior

After rollback or driver reinstall, test the laptop at idle and load.

If the noise persists, it may be coil whine from the graphics or power circuitry, which is normal in some gaming laptops.

I hope this helps.
