Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Hello HP Support,

I own an HP Victus 15-fb0xxx (Ryzen 5 5600H, RTX 3050, Windows 11). Recently, after cleaning the laptop's vents (without opening the battery or touching internal cables), the BIOS and battery report started showing incorrect battery values:

  • Design Capacity: 12,997 mWh

  • Full Charge Capacity: 12,997 mWh

  • Cycle Count: 120

However, under actual usage, the battery still performs normally and Windows logs show correct readings around 58,000 to 59,000 mWh — which matches what I used to see before. So, this seems to be a firmware/EC misread and not actual battery degradation.

I’ve already tried:

  • EC reset (power button for 30 seconds)

  • Charge/discharge cycles

  • BIOS rollback

  • HP diagnostics tool

Nothing helped.

I believe this is a firmware-level bug and would request:

  1. Help with reflashing the Embedded Controller (EC) firmware, or

  2. Assistance in restoring correct battery information in BIOS.

  3. I didn't even changed battery but on 19 it is showing I changed it.

Hi @astr1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for letting us know, and we appreciate the detailed report regarding your HP Victus 15-fb0xxx laptop. You've done an excellent job already with the troubleshooting steps and based on the information you've provided — particularly the discrepancy between actual battery usage values (~58,000 mWh) and the misreported design capacity (12,997 mWh) — we agree this appears to be an issue related to Embedded Controller (EC) firmware memory, not battery degradation.

Let’s try fixing it step-by-step to resolve this.

1. Download Latest BIOS & EC Firmware

Go to the official HP support page for your model: 👉 Victus Gaming Laptop 15-fb0xxx (9Q2U3U8) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

  • Download and install the latest BIOS update (even if you’ve rolled back before).
  • If available, also install any System Firmware or Embedded Controller updates.

2. Perform a Full EC Reset (Advanced)

You’ve already tried a basic EC reset. Here’s a deeper method:

  1. Shut down the laptop completely.
  2. Unplug the charger.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the charger back in and boot into BIOS (press F10 on startup).
  5. Let the system sit in BIOS for 5–10 minutes, then exit.

3. Use HP Battery Check Tool

Even if you’ve run diagnostics, try this specific tool: 👉 HP Battery Check: Fix laptop battery not charging | HP® Support

It may help reinitialize battery reporting or generate a Failure ID if something is wrong at the firmware level.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
