Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

HP Omen 17-an018ur
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Battery level does not work correctly.

The laptop can show the charge level of 100% for a week and turn off abruptly. If you connect the charger a few days may show 0% charge.

HP Support assistant recommends that you contact a service center because it cannot identify the battery.

Sometimes everything works fine, but it is very rare. 3-7 days can be the same charge indicator, reset arbitrarily.

I have installed ubuntu 18.04 battery there behaves the same as on Windows 10. Drivers updated, BIOS too, nothing helps.

Took the laptop to the store passed under warranty for repair. A week back, reinstalled Windows, deleting all my data, in the conclusion have written, what problems were encountered. I refused their conclusion and asked to check again, because right in front of me the charge level was 100%, and after 20 minutes changed dramatically to 93%.

What am I to do? Is it a hardware problem?

Hello @VlaDi4eKK

It certainly sounds like a hardware issue if its as you say.

Are you still under warranty now?

If so, I would contact HP support via the website and speak to an agent.

Im assuming you have not gone through that route yet?

Hello @Photoray002!

I contacted technical support about 2 months ago. The operator said that the problem is likely hardware. He was asked to do a diagnostic on the battery using HP Support Assistant. Battery test showed that the battery is faulty.  At that time, I have not been able to carry the laptop in for repair, because I'm working on it.

A week ago, I took a leave of absence for repairs. Took it to the service center and a week later I was refused repair, because in fact the service center could not detect the fault. I have doubts in their methods of diagnosis of battery, because according to the documents from the store in the SC laptop was 2-3 days.

I think that diagnosis was conducted using the same utility HP Support Assistant, but there is not always a malfunction is detected, sometimes this utility was written about a good condition battery, although at this point, the system display indicated the battery level is 50-60% for the past 3-4 days. Sometimes it was possible to reset the state of charge if you disconnect the battery contacts from the motherboard. But this decision will not suit anyone.

The laptop I have a warranty, there is a problem with the purchase. The fact that the warranty ends at the end of the month and I'm worried that the fault will not be corrected. I'm a programmer and use a laptop to work, I'm good at Troubleshooting.

On the laptop I several times sent reports through the HP utility, and in the service center write to me that everything is normal.

What should I do and where to apply?

Is it possible to access your reports to show proof of a malfunction in the service center?

This is a peer to peer forum. All I can do is ask the admins to have a Rep contact you.

They will do so during the business week most likely.
