Hello,
I went through a lot of posts regarding issues with HP Omen and M.2 PCIe NVMe upgrade so wanted to know if there is fix available or not yet.
I have ordered OMEN by HP - 15-dc0106tx which should arrive by evening but confused whether to upgrade the 128 GB drive to 512 GB or not. In my country India, the reliable options available are Samsung 860 Evo and 970 Evo/Pro.
Since this is a relatively new model and no one is sure about the compatibility, can I get a recommendation and if possible method to get the OS on SSD and use the 1 TB HDD as storage? I have ruled out 860 Evo as it is M.2 SATA based and may not give the benefits of PCIe NVMe one.
Please recommend the following:
1) Compatible drives to upgrade from existing 128 GB available in India.
2) Workaround to get it working like boot drive with HDD as storage if no fix available yet.
Thanks,
Dilmeet Singh

Okay, I am all set. Used Mini Tool Partition and all is fine now.
Steps to upgrade are super easy.
1) Start your Omen and set it up as you like. Once done, create a system image disc using this link.
2) Use the Data Drive D:\ 1 Tb, secondary storage to place your system image.
3) Create a Windows 10 Bootable USB using Windows Media Creation Tool using this link.
4) Shut the Laptop down and use the service manual to access the back panel. Replace the existing M.2 128 GB PCIe NVMe SSD with the SSD of your choice. (I used Samsung 970 Evo and it is fully compatible).
5) Start the Laptop and tap F10 several times to get into BIOS.
6) Select USB Disk as the boot device, save and connect it while the system boots.
7) Follow the instructions to restore from the system image using this link.
😎 If all goes well, the system will prompt for a restart.
9) Once restarted, keep tapping the F10 key and make Boot Manager as the Boot device.
10) Disconnect the drive and allow the Laptop to boot. Should be all good!
11) In case the partition doesn't look right, use Mini Tool Partition.
I am so happy and relieved now. Awesome experience!

Hello @erdilmeet
Good question because as you said, its a new release and not much info is out by users on what drives have been working for upgrades. Sometimes there will be a model that is not seen in the bios for what ever reason.
A while back, another user said he was going to install the Evo 970. He never chimed back so I assume everything went well.
HP themselves will only recommend what they sell. IF you want 100% guarantee of which one works at the moment, you would have to order it through them. But that option is very pricey, so I would take a guess that the Samsung 970 should be good. Don't waste money on the Pro version.
Sorry, thats as good as I can give you on that subject.
IF you are going 512GB, you should be able to simply create the HP Recovery USB media from the original and install it to the upgrade. You have to install a 512GB drive for it to work. Otherwise you can clean install with the Microsoft ISO.
Disconnect the HDD when installing first. Then when you see the new SSD working as it should, wipe the HDD and use it for the storage drive.
Here is the service manual... http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06034959
Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the tip. I will get the laptop today and set it like I want before I create a recovery media. Then will order the Samsung 970 Evo and disconnect the HDD to be sure. Will post in few weeks if all works well.

Updates to the system will not carry over to the recovery media. Its only for restoring back to factory specs.
Go ahead and make it when you get the laptop. You'll need a 16GB usb pen drive.
Oh and BTW... HP only allows you to make one recovery USB. Dont lose it.

Hmm, I will try the clean setup then. This will replace my desktop so I have everything I need w/o issue. Let me order the 970 Evo then and start. Already have Windows 10 USB Pro media and a license ready.

Use the recovery media FIRST on the new drive to ensure the Omen software gets installed and works.
IF you use the Microsoft ISO, it will not have any of the Omen software and the command center is hard to get installed and working afterward.
Omen command center has been known to not work on Windows 10 pro.
Unless you dont need to use it anyway.
Just trying ot save you some headaches. ![]()

Okay here is the deal then. I work as the Infrastructure engineer for my organization so have a Windows 10 Pro License (The one with the Laptop is a Windows 10 Home). So, first should I upgrade the license, create a media and then go the clean way or something different? I want to utilize the Professional licesne to get the full blown Windows 10 Experience.

Okay just checked the Omen command center and this is something I can skip seriously. I am not into overclocking plus since the Laptop is my desktop replacement, it will work on defaults for the most part. Thanks for the heads up!
Will test and then proceed as that's what I do at my job
I just hope it all goes well and my experience can help in anyway!
