Dear folks

I am about to purchase HP Victus 15 fb 3185ax and would like to know more about the processor used in this one.

@MohanrajR,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The HP Victus 15-fb3185AX you're looking at comes with the AMD Ryzen 7 260 processor. According to HP's official spec page, here are the key details:

  • 8 cores / 16 threads

  • Base/Boost Speeds: Up to 5.1 GHz max boost clock

  • Cache: 16 MB L3 cache

  • Architecture: AMD Zen 4 (Hawk Point) mobile CPU

  • Integrated graphics: Radeon 780M (though this laptop also has an RTX 5050 dedicated GPU, which will handle the heavy lifting for gaming)

  • Memory support: DDR5-5600

What Does this Mean in Practice?

  • Everyday performance: Very strong for multitasking, office work, web browsing, and streaming.

  • Gaming: The CPU is more than capable; performance in games will mostly depend on the RTX 5050 graphics card.

  • Productivity: 8 cores / 16 threads give plenty of headroom for creative apps, photo/video editing, and even some light 3D rendering.

  • Thermals: As with all modern laptop CPUs, sustained performance depends on HP’s cooling design -short bursts can hit 5.1 GHz, but under long heavy loads, speeds will settle based on heat and power limits.

In short: in my opinion, the Ryzen 7 260 is a modern, capable CPU that pairs well with the RTX 5050 for a solid all-round gaming and productivity laptop.

Can you please help me with Ram Upgarde details, since on the page it says upto 32Gb and it comes with 24gb single stick. Is upto 32gb single slot - 32*2-64gb or 24*2-48gb or 32gb in total of both 16*2-32gb max ?

@SamK0,

The HP Victus 15-fb3185AX can take a maximum of 64 GB (2x32GB) of DDR5-5600 MHz SODIMM RAM. The laptop features two SODIMM slots for memory upgrades.

To maximize performance, you should use two matching RAM sticks to enable dual-channel memory mode. For example, if you want 32 GB of RAM, you should use two 16 GB sticks rather than a single 32 GB stick.

While HP appears to sell this model with a single 24 GB stick, this configuration will operate in single-channel mode, which is less efficient. Meaning, you should preferably order this laptop with 2x16GB of RAM if you can.

Note: If you are unsure, you can verify your laptop's maximum supported capacity by running a command in Windows, by opening the Command Prompt as Administrator: type or copy/paste/Enter:

wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx

The result will be in kilobytes, which you can convert to gigabytes by dividing by 1,048,576.

Hope this was helpful.

What if we use 24*2 this run is dual channel efficiently?

HP Recommended

@SamK0,

No, 2x24GB RAM is inadvisable.

Here's why:

1. How Dual Channel Normally Works:

  • Dual channel = memory controller accesses two memory modules in parallel (one channel per stick).

  • For full efficiency, the two modules must be symmetrical in capacity and rank layout.

    • Example: 16 GB + 16 GB → perfect symmetry → 32 GB dual channel.

2. Why 24 GB Modules Are "Odd":

  • DDR5 SODIMMs don't just come in powers of two anymore (8, 16, 32 GB). We now see 24 GB and 48 GB modules because DDR5 uses higher-density DRAM chips (12 Gb, 24 Gb).

  • A 24 GB SODIMM is almost always dual rank (two 12 GB ranks).

  • When you pair 2×24 GB, the memory controller sees 48 GB total, but the symmetry between channels can be imperfect depending on the IMC (integrated memory controller) and BIOS support.

3. Flex Mode Explained:

If both channels can't be fully mirrored, the IMC falls back to Flex Mode:

  • The first matched portion (e.g., 16 GB + 16 GB) runs dual channel.

  • The unmatched remainder (the “extra” 8 GB on each stick in this case) runs single channel.

  • Result: you still get the capacity (48 GB), but memory bandwidth is lower than with a fully symmetrical configuration.

Meaning, with 2×24 GB, only ~32 GB of your 48 GB may run in true dual channel, while the rest runs single channel. That's why it's considered less efficient than 2×16 GB.

4. Frequency Support (DDR5-5600):

OEM laptops (such as the Victus you're looking at) usually have memory speed locked by HP’s BIOS and the CPU’s JEDEC spec.

  • The Ryzen 7 7840HS in the 15-fb3185AX officially supports DDR5-5600 in dual channel.

  • But if the memory controller struggles with non-standard sizes like 24 GB, the BIOS may down-clock to 5200 or 4800 MHz for stability.

5. Why 2×16 GB Wins:

  • 16 GB DDR5 SODIMMs are well-validated by AMD and HP → guaranteed full dual channel at 5600 MHz.

  • 24 GB modules are newer, less widely supported → they work, but often not in peak configuration.

Bottom line:

  • 2×24 GB (48 GB total) will work, but not all of it will run in full dual channel → some bandwidth loss.

  • 2×16 GB (32 GB total) = maximum efficiency, fully supported.

  • 2×32 GB (64 GB total) would be ideal for big workloads but double-check if this Victus model supports it officially.

Hope this answered all of your questions.

Thank you so much for the advice. i will got it 16*2=32gb 5600mhz since it very cost efficient and as per your advice FB3185AX Supports upto 32gb, i guess 32gb is enough for AAA title for 2-3 years.

Thank you for your support

@SamK0,

You're quite welcome and best wishes!

Yes, 2x16GB of fast DDR5 RAM is more than sufficient to play any game!
