CPU cooling fan does not get power. Only after changing the fans found new one also not working. Please advice to rectify.

If the CPU cooling fan on your HP OMEN 17.3 laptop is not getting power, even after replacing the fan, the issue could stem from other hardware or firmware components. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and rectify this problem.

 

Check the Fan Connector and Connection:

  • Inspect the fan connector: Ensure that the fan cable is securely connected to the motherboard's fan header.
  • Look for bent pins or damage to the fan header on the motherboard.

BIOS Settings and Updates:

  • Reset BIOS to defaults:
    1. Turn off the laptop.
    2. Power it on while pressing the ESC or F10 key to enter BIOS.
    3. Look for an option to "Load Setup Defaults" or "Reset BIOS Defaults."
  • Update BIOS:
    • If the BIOS is outdated, download the latest version from the HP Support website and install it.

Test the Fan with an External Power Source:

  • Verify the new fan is functional:
    • Test the fan by connecting it to an external power source or another device to see if it spins.

Inspect the Motherboard:

  • The fan header on the motherboard could be damaged.
  • Look for visible signs of damage such as burnt components or corrosion near the fan header.
  • If damage is found, a motherboard repair or replacement might be required.

Check Power Delivery:

  • Use a multimeter to test if the fan header on the motherboard is supplying power.
    • Typical CPU fan headers supply 5V or 12V, depending on the fan type.
    • If no power is detected, the motherboard might have an issue.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all power sources (battery and adapter).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power and test again.

Test with a Different Fan Header:

  • If your motherboard has multiple fan headers, try connecting the CPU fan to another header to determine if the issue is with the original fan header.

Thank you. Will do bios defaul and hard reset and see. Technician said control IC problem.
