Constant 15-20 seconds freezing when playing World of Warcraft, getting event 153, 13 or 0 in event viewer.
Have tried many different possible solutions but nothing has helped until now except running the game on integrated graphics which is far from ideal.

This seems to be a common issue as I've read other similar reports on this website, could be a BIOS or firmware problem?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi @DS1993

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I completely understand how disruptive this must be, especially when you're forced to rely on integrated graphics for a demanding game like WoW.

The GPU freezing on your HP Omen 16 while playing World of Warcraft—triggering Event IDs 153, 13, and 0—is likely tied to driver or firmware conflicts, particularly with the NVIDIA GPU. Disabling PCIe power saving and updating key components may help stabilize performance.

Let’s walk through a few targeted steps that have helped others resolve similar issues:

1. Disable PCIe Link State Power Management

This setting can cause latency spikes and GPU stalls.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management.
  • Set it to Off for both battery and plugged-in modes.

2. Clean Install NVIDIA Drivers

Event 153 often points to nvlddmkm.sys issues.

  • Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode to remove all NVIDIA drivers.
  • Download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA’s site.
  • Install using Custom > Clean Install and avoid GeForce Experience during setup.

3. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

HP may have released firmware updates to address GPU stability.

  • Visit the HP Omen 16 Drivers Page and enter your exact model.
  • Download and install the latest:
    • BIOS update
    • Intel Chipset driver
    • NVIDIA graphics driver (if listed)

Note: Do not interrupt the BIOS update process. Ensure your battery is charged and the system is plugged in.

4. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause inconsistent GPU initialization.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save.

5. Monitor with HP Diagnostics

Run a full system test using HP’s built-in diagnostics:

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter diagnostics.
  • Run System Test > Extensive Test to check GPU and memory health.

If the issue persists even after these steps, you might consider temporarily locking WoW to use DirectX 11 instead of 12, which can reduce GPU load and improve compatibility.

Let me know your exact Omen 16 model number and Windows version if you'd like direct links to BIOS and driver updates. I’ll make sure you get the most stable setup possible.
