Hello,
My HP Omen 16 has been experiencing severe stuttering during games. The FPS suddenly drops from around 90 to 5 for about three seconds before returning to normal. I’ve already updated the BIOS, drivers, and Windows to the latest versions, but the issue persists.

When the stutter occurs, the Omen Gaming Hub displays a yellow warning indicating high temperatures. However, both the GPU and CPU temperatures appear normal—around 70°C for the GPU and 78°C for the CPU.

Hi @GAVILYO,

I understand your HP Omen 16 is experiencing severe stuttering during games, with FPS dropping sharply even though GPU and CPU temperatures look normal. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check for Thermal Throttling Beyond Reported Temps

Even if temps show 70–78°C, short spikes above 90°C can trigger throttling.

Use tools like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to log temperatures over time, not just current values.

Monitor Power Limits (PL1/PL2)

HP Omen laptops often enforce strict CPU/GPU power limits.

When the system detects sustained load, it may drop performance suddenly.

In Omen Gaming Hub, check if “Performance Mode” is enabled and whether power limits are being capped.

Check VRM and Memory Temperatures

The Gaming Hub warning may be triggered by VRM or memory overheating, not just CPU/GPU.

These sensors aren’t always visible in standard monitoring tools.

Update Omen Gaming Hub and HP System Drivers

Make sure Omen Gaming Hub and HP System Event Utility are updated.

Outdated utilities can misreport temps or enforce incorrect throttling.

Test with Different Power Plans

In Windows, set the power plan to High Performance.

In Omen Gaming Hub, select Performance Mode instead of Balanced.

This prevents aggressive down‑clocking during gameplay.

Check Background Processes

Open Task Manager and look for spikes in disk usage, antivirus scans, or Windows services.

These can cause sudden FPS drops unrelated to temperature.

Run a Stress Test

Use tools like FurMark (GPU) or Prime95 (CPU) to stress test.

If stuttering occurs under synthetic load, it confirms a hardware/power delivery issue.

I hope this helps.
