Hey there!
I have read something about the HP OMEN 16-k0011ns that I don't think it is true, but I have to ask:
The question was about HDMI and USB Type-C ports. Someone has said that there are some ports in the laptop where the NVIDIA is connected and others don't. Is that true? Are there some ports where the NVIDIA card isn't connect?
I don't think this is true. I've been working with computers more than 20 years and this is the first time I heard that. I know that you can select which graphic card you want to use on the BIOS. Bu this is new for me.
Thanks!

Hi @VansFannel,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to assist you.
The claim about certain ports on the HP OMEN 16-k0011ns being connected to the NVIDIA GPU while others are not is plausible and applies to many modern laptops designed with dual GPUs (integrated and dedicated). Here's why:
Dual GPU Setup in Modern Laptops
The HP OMEN 16-k0011ns has a dual GPU configuration:
- Integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe Graphics) from the Intel processor.
- Dedicated NVIDIA GPU (e.g., RTX 3060, 3070, or similar).
In such setups, the ports on the laptop can be wired either:
- Directly to the NVIDIA GPU for maximum performance, typically for gaming or rendering tasks.
- To the Integrated GPU for power efficiency during lighter workloads or when running on battery.
Why Certain Ports Are Wired Differently
This is by design and can vary depending on the laptop's internal architecture. For example:
- HDMI Port: Often directly wired to the NVIDIA GPU for high-performance external display output.
- USB-C/DisplayPort via USB-C: Sometimes routed through the integrated GPU for power savings or hybrid GPU switching.
How to Confirm for the HP OMEN 16-k0011ns
Check Manufacturer Specifications: HP's documentation may specify which ports are connected to which GPU. If not, testing or software tools can clarify.
Testing with External Displays:
- Connect an external monitor to the HDMI port and a USB-C port (if it supports DisplayPort).
- Use NVIDIA Control Panel or Windows Graphics Settings to identify the GPU driving the monitor.
NVIDIA Control Panel:
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Navigate to "Set PhysX Configuration" or "Configure Surround, PhysX".
- This page shows which ports are connected to which GPU.
BIOS/Software Control:
- Some laptops allow you to toggle or select a "dGPU-only" mode in the BIOS, forcing all ports to use the dedicated NVIDIA GPU. Alternatively, this can sometimes be managed via software.
Conclusion
It's entirely possible for some ports on the HP OMEN 16-k0011ns to use the integrated GPU while others use the NVIDIA GPU. This is not a universal rule but depends on the laptop's internal wiring. If you frequently use external monitors or demanding tasks, knowing this detail can help you optimize performance.
