OMEN by HP Laptop PC - 15-ax000nl (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi community!

I have got a OMEN by HP Laptop PC - 15-ax000nl (ENERGY STAR), and after 4 years of great service, I am thinking about making some upgrades.

I know some theory but then I have no idea about what to do practically, which the best compatible upgrades for my laptop are.

As it's a DDR4 I may improve the 2 RAMs from 8+8 GBs to 16+16.

Also, I want to replace the battery.

Any idea about what would be the best ram and battery to buy?

Moreover, I am wondering what else I might replace: 4k screen? Graphic card? Anything else? I have no idea, please enlighten me!

I am ready to provide with further information should you need them.

Thank you so much

Fabrizio

Its specs

Manual for the series

           http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05357609.pdf

1. RAM: page 4 of the manual says max is 16GB but you can upgrade to 32GB using following compatible RAM (will run at 2133MHz as manual says

                     https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct2k16g4sfd824a/ct9874293

             or    https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/bl2k8g26c16s4b/ct16706704

2. BATTERY: It uses 3-cell, 61.5 Wh Li-ion part #  849910-850 which is N/A from HP

             https://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=849910-850

Please use part# and buy elsewhere   for example

             https://www.newegg.com/p/16J-00UP-000D0

3. SCREEN: Page 60 shows compatible 4K screen for the series , but you need to check internal first

4. VIDEO CARD: No, you have to buy a whole new System board which contains

  •         New CPU,
  •         New video card
  •         New Windows license

If you wish, please use the list on page 53 of the manual

Regards.

Hi there, thank you very much for replying to each point and I did download the manual, very useful indeed.

RAM

I have got some doubts on which one choosing.

1. Ballistix costs less, looks faster (2666 > 2400 but maybe my understanding is wrong) but has no reviews.

2. Crucial looks more widely used and appreciated and on top of that I can also see the Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM which costs few $ more but should be even better, shouldn't it? So, is this latter the best possible?

BATTERY

I had no idea i needed that code "part#", thank you so much. So is there a "best" battery among the ones with that code or that code identify a unique battery with no room for improvement?

SCREEN

What do you mean by checking the internal? Can i report anything from system info to let you understand if I can have the 4k screen?

VIDEO CARD

Thank you, so does that mean, according to the manual, that the best motherboard I can possibly have is Intel i7-7700HQ system board, GeForce GTX 1050Ti, 4 GB ?

Thank you very much

Fabrizio

@FabrizioM

1. RAM: Crucial guaranteed RAM will work or refund.

2. BATTERY: Only one part # which is unique but you know they can come from many sources

3. SCREEN: I have not opened same machine, therefore guessing

4. VIDEO: Your machine uses Gen 6 CPU. Ports (such as USB ports, HDMI port ....) layout should be the same for Gen 7 CPU. Note you have to pay for the whole system board.

Regards.

Thanks again!

I have therefore bought the 2 Crucial 3200 and the battery. As for screen and systemboard, I got it, thank you.

Very last thing if I may: SSD.

Still from Crucial website, I think the best option for me would be the Crucial P5 500GB PCIe M.2 2280SS SSD at $64.99. I will go for this one but I have a doubt on how proceeding.

At the moment I have all the programmes + windows files on the SSD (128GB) partition C: and everything else on HDD.

By replacing the current SSD with the 500GB one, is it possible to kind of clone the whole partition in the new SSD. I am afraid i might brick the laptop or lose stuff.

Thank you

Fabrizio

Hi again, differently from what expected, unfortunately the 2 Crucial I bought didn't work: they triggered a BSOD.

Aren't they compatible with my laptop? What could cause that?

Thank you

Fabrizio
