Omen 17-an179wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Ok this has been a weird issue.  To start I wanted to clone the 1TB HDD in the Omen to a 2TB drive.  So I took the back off, took out the HDD, and cloned it using Macrium Reflect on another machine.  I took the new HDD and installed it back into the laptop.  I turn the computer on and see only a black screen.  The screen does quickly flash when you first turn it on but nothing after that.  So naturally I connect an external monitor via HDMI to the laptop.  I get a screen stating there was an error with HDD.  Ok no problem I will just take out the HDD and see if that would work as the laptop has an M.2 style SSD also.

Now I get a windows loading screen with the Omen logo and the chasing dots.  Then screen goes black and external monitor says "No Signal Detected."  Hmm ok now I just reboot and try again.  Same result.  I look at the back to see if anything may have been snaged or pulled out but all connections seem secure.  I try booting up again and to my surprise I have a windows login screen on the external monitor.  I log in.  Everything seems normal with the exception of the files on the HDD are not there of course.  I check the display settings and it recognizes there are two screens attached and it shows that there is an external and an internal.  However, still nothing on the internal screen.  So I start looking to install new video drivers.  However, I wanted to test boot again to see if I get back to windows or if I go back to not having any working screen.  After the reboot I am back to no screen working once windows boots.

Next I do what the HP support documents say.  First complete a Hard Reset.  No change.  Next is to connect an external display,  well I did this already, see above.  Next to recover the BIOS.  Did this and no change.  Next to reseat the RAM Moduels.  Tried switching them, no change.  Tried one at a time in each slot, no change.

At this point I tried safe mode.  In safe mode the external screen works every single time.  However, the internal screen does not.  Also if I select safe mode with networking, I get a symbol in the task tray showing the LAN symbol but when I pop in an ethernet cord to the computer I get nothing.  Something else I noticed is that neither of the HDDs I have will work now.  The one I put the clone onto and the original, I get an Hard Disk error if either are connected.

Last thing I did was ran the internal HP Hardware tests.  Did the extensive test and everything passed.  HArd Disk, wireless, Video, etc... everything said PASS.  I have no idea what else to do.  I'm leaning toward Motherboard failure but I honestly don't know.

@kcurry1980,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Do you have both the hard drives installed on the computer?
  • Have you checked with the original (1tb) hard drive?

Meanwhile, I recommend you boot to bios by tapping the F10 key on startup and check whether you get the display on the internal screen. If the issue persists, then it is an issue with the display.

I recommend you contact support and they will assist you in this regard.
