Hello, I'm trying to boot from samsung x5 external ssd attached by thunderbolt cable, but it seems there's no option to select it as boot drive. BIOS settings aren't of any help, there are very little of options that could even remotely sound helpfull here. I'd appreciate any kind of help, thanks in advance

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I understand that your trying to boot from an external SSD, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Does your Samsung SSD have Windows OS on it?
  • Have you tried with the different USB cables or ports on your computer? ( type-C to type B cable instead type C to type C)

Keep me posted for further assistance.

    correct.

sadly this particular model of external SSD is only Thunderbolt compatible. I've been booting from other external USB SSDs fine.

    Best regards

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

And, also you can try to Create Windows 10 installation media and install windows image.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I can boot fine from that drive on other PC and from internal pre-installed drives. Issue is there's no option to select Thunderbolt device as boot device. I have no problem with creating bootable USB drive nor being unable to boot completely, there must have been missunderstanding of some sort.

As title says I just want to boot from Thunderbolt device.

Thank you for your response though
