HP Omen 17' cracking top cover due to design flaw

I'm out of warranty and the notebook top cover is cracking with regular use due a hinge design flaw. This problem has been reported by many other customers by I haven't found   it addressed by HP. I find this an absurd for a $1000+ product. Has anyone else found a solution for this? Can a moderator forward me to higher tier support? The HP representative informed me that I would have to pay $400 for a repair but this is unacceptable considering it's clearly a design flaw. [edit]
