HP Omen 17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good morning!

I am a high school football coach--we recently purchased an HP Omen 17 inch laptop (we have tried numerous laptops to work with our film viewing/editing, etc).

I have no clue what I did (or anyone else in our office) .. .but I am stuck on a "Boot Device Not Found" screen upon initial start up. (See the attached pic for a screenshot).

I have tried to do a reset (unplugged all the outside connections including power) ... no luck.

I have read some things on line that point in the direction of using Windows Media to get things restarted.

Something that pointed towards reviewing the BIOS (I know I probably shouldn't be messing with that).

Can anyone help me out? Upfront ... I am a freaking moron ... so I will probably need something really specific to ensure that I don't jack up anything.

Thanks in advance for any the community may share!

OK Thanks. Looks like you must have posted a photo that contained the Serial Number and the Mods deleted it. Reason is, we aren't allowed to post serial numbers for your own security. But no worries.

If your school purchased this in August (and I assume you are in the USA) you are out of warranty by one month, unless they also purchased an extended warranty.

If you are truly out of warranty, you can try re-installing Windows yourself. If it works, you are golden. If not, you will have to buy another hard drive and replace the old one.

Try this first...

You will need a blank 8GB (8 to 32 GB will work) USB pen drive (USB-3 drive will be faster).

From another computer, download the MS Media Creation Tool and run it with the USB drive connected... Create media Windows 10

When prompted, accept the Terms and Agreements.

Next, choose Create installation media.

MS TOOL 01.JPG

Next, uncheck the box for Use recommended. Make sure the Language is correct and the Edition is Windows 10, 64-bit.

MS TOOL 02.JPG

Next, choose USB flash drive.

MS TOOL 03.JPG

Your USB drive should show in the list. If so, click Next.

MS TOOL 04.JPG

Windows will begin downloading the files and create the installer . This will take a while.

When its done, you will see a message stating that its ready. Click the Finish button.

To install Windows to the OMEN...

  1. Make sure the laptop is plugged in to the Power Cord.
  2. Insert the USB installer you just made.
  3. Press the power button and begin rapidly tapping the ESC key for the Options menu.
  4. Choose the F9 key for Boot Device Options.
  5. You should see your USB drive in the list. You will probably see it listed two times. Choose the one with UEFI in the title.
TIP: If it is having issues with the UEFI version, choose the non UEFI USB version. IF its not showing at all in the list, you will have to go into the bios (F10 at reboot) and turn off Secure Boot and enable Legacy mode, but this most likely wont happen.
  6. A blue screen should open with the install options. Make sure the options are correct for Language, keyboard, etc.
  7. Click Next and then click Install Now.
  8. Accept the License Terms and click Next.
  9. Choose CUSTOM, then click on each Drive item to highlight it and Delete them. Do this for all of them. Then click Next.

Let Windows do its thing and install Windows. When its finished, it will prompt you to create your account and add your WiFi information. Go ahead and set it up. When Windows connects to the internet, it will automatically activate itself.

Go to Windows Updates and click the Check for Updates button and make Windows run any updates that it needs.

IF the laptop will not let you install Windows, or if you encounter errors during or after installation, you will need to purchase a new drive. Save the USB installer as you will need it again after installing a new drive.

Type the Product ID number here in the thread and I will look up what you have currently.

Hello @quickslick

Actually it might not have been anything you've done.

  1. What is the full model or Product ID number of your Omen? It might be in tiny letters on the bottom side of the case. Or if you rapidly tap the F1 key after you hit the power button, an info menu will open.
  2. Are you still under warranty?
  3. If you rapidly tap the F2 key, a diagnostics window should appear. Its called the UEFI Diagnostics (make sure the power cord is plugged in). If so, go to Component Tests and navigate to the hard drive (storage) tests. Run the short test first. If it finds nothing, run the long test. It will probably give you an error code which basically means the hard drive has failed and needs replaced. Sometimes new drives can fail regardless of what you do.

Basically... I'm looking to see if it shows a failed drive which is probably what happened. If you don't get a failure code, it might be that Windows can be reinstalled on that existing drive. Either way, you are gonna lose what ever was on your drive if its not backed up already. If you have something important on there you didn't back up, you might be able to recover it if you remove the drive and place reconnect it via a USB adapter into another computer. If the drive is readable, you would most likely be able to extract the data.

IF the system is still under warranty, HP will replace the drive for you at no cost. BUT HP does not do data recovery. You would have to do that yourself first.

Let me know what else I can help with.

Thanks a ton for responding back!

I have attached a pic of the model number/information.

Warranty ... great question. At the very beginning of August ... we asked our Boosters for money for a new laptop. They asked us what we wanted ... and a day later we had an Omen 17 (I believe it was actually bought online at Amazon. I am in the process of getting the receipt and any other information that was obtained at purchase.

I have done both the Short and Long Test ... no drive issues or errors for both. If I remember correctly the message for both: "No Errors Found" (I could be wrong about exact verbiage).

The good news is ... I am not worried about anything that was previously saved on the computer (we use this one to project to a projector for team film ... so it is basically clean).

Thanks again for checking things out. Tough, busy time of the year with a ton going on for football ... our Type A Head Coach enjoys yelling about technology and computers ... so I would love to find a way to get things rolling before he figures out what is going on!

Thanks a ton!

As soon as practice is over ... I will give it a shot!

With the warranty .... I am a little confused.

We just got the laptop in August of 2019 (thinking you may have thought that we got the laptop last year?)

Either way ... greatly appreciated ... I will let you know how it goes as soon as I am finished!

Ok Sorry. If only last month its good then. thought you were talking last year with the model info i could barely see in your image.

Photoray002--Let me say this ... if you ever come to Kentucky ... I owe you breakfast, lunch and dinner ... and all the beverages of your choice.

The solution WORKED ... and I can not begin to express how much I appreciate your help.

Our program is a consistent small school power in Kentucky ... and we spend a ton of time with film (usually HUDL ... which is an online video editing/viewing tool). Your solution helped me fly under the radar with our type A personality head coach (great dude .. just wound pretty tight during the season!). l

If there is anything that I can do to repay the favor ... just say the word! Thanks a ton. THANKS!!!

No worries, I'm glad its working for you now.

Type A personalities, Yes we've all had to deal with a few of them before ...  😂

You should be good to go now. As far as Drivers are concerned, Windows 10 now installs pretty much everything you need. If there is a driver issue, HP has a drivers page that you can grab what you need, but usually not necessary.

I assume you aren't gaming with your machine, its primarily for work. But If you decide you want the HP Omen Command Center put back in your programs list, there are a couple of things that have to be done. Its an interface that gives you basic information about temperatures and usage while gaming. Let me know if you decide you want that.

If I ever go to Kentucky some day. Ill let you know. Ha Ha..

Thanks.
