Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution
HP Recommended

I had my laptop on on Monday August 11th. I noticed that my battery is finally shot as even with it being plugged up it was only at 6% when I turned it on, so I brought a new battery. I just finished placing in the battery, plugged in the power cord and tried turning it on but it's not turning on. The battery is one that is internal so it sucks to keep opening the back just to get to the battery. If I have to I will but is there anyway to get it to turn on without opening and removing the battery cord to do a hard reset?

Hi @Elite1stDaGree

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation — it sounds like you did everything right by replacing the internal battery, but now your HP Omen gaming laptop won’t power on at all, even with the new battery and charger connected. I understand how frustrating it is, especially since accessing the battery requires opening the back each time.

Let’s go through some reliable steps to help force the laptop to power on without opening it, and then next steps if it still doesn’t respond.

Step 1: Basic External Hard Reset (No Disassembly Required)

Since HP Omen laptops don’t have removable batteries, you can still perform a hard reset using the built-in hardware reset method:

Disconnect everything:

Unplug the charger.

Remove any external devices (USB, HDMI, etc.).

Hold the Power Button:

Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Release the button.

Reconnect charger only (do not plug in any USB devices or peripherals).

Press the power button normally to turn it on.

This helps drain any static charge or power issues without needing to open the laptop.

Step 2: Check Charger and Charging Port

Before opening the laptop, ensure:

The charger is working. If possible, test with another compatible HP charger.

The power LED near the charging port comes on or blinks (on many Omen models).

If no lights at all show up — the problem may be with power delivery or the mainboard.

Step 3: Try With Original Battery or Without Battery (if accessible)

If Step 1 doesn’t work and you're willing to open it again:

Reconnect the old battery (if it still has some charge), or try powering the laptop with the new battery disconnected and AC adapter plugged in.

This helps isolate whether the issue is with the new battery connection or something else introduced during replacement.

If the laptop powers on without the battery, the new battery may be defective or incorrectly seated.

Next Steps

If none of the above works, here’s what you can do next:

Double-check the internal battery connection (if opening again):

Ensure battery cable is firmly plugged in.

Inspect the connector and board for signs of damage or pin misalignment.

Try booting from power only (battery removed, AC plugged in).

Reseat RAM (if accessible) — occasionally loose RAM causes black screen/no boot behavior.
