I have an Omen 17 laptop which is only just coming up to three years old, but recently its performance has dropped significantly.
The first problem I noticed was strange audio glitches - whenever the machine is put under temporary stress, the audio cuts out for a moment with a very brief grinding/scratching noise. For example, if I'm playing Civilisation 6 (a relatively low-demand game) with itunes on in the background, its fine until I hit 'End turn', at which point the momentary increase in processing power needed by the game causes the audio to glitch.
Recently I tried to play Assassin's Creed again, the first time in a while I've played something really demanding, and it won't run properly any more. A year ago I played the game extensively and could run it on high settings and get a steady 60fps, now it won't even manage a consistent 30fps with all the settings on low. (I've also tried a different game, Horizon Zero Dawn, to make sure it wasn't a problem with just AC; same thing happened.)
I've run the built-in HP diagnostic software and it can't find anything. I've made sure the graphics card has up-to-date drivers, and even tried rolling back to previous ones. I've also opened up the back and given the fans a good clean to make sure they weren't getting clogged up and causing overheating. It still runs low-demand programs fine, but I don't understand why it suddenly can't handle games which it easily meets the recommended specs for. Interestingly, when I asked Horizon Zero Dawn to autodetect graphics settings, it set everything to lowest possible, which it never used to do, so the game is able to detect something isn't right.
Any help gratefully received!
