Pavilion Gaming cx-0113ur
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After couple of hours gaming or 20-30 min Furmark stress test the laptop shutsdown and doesnt startup showing 5-3 LED signals( 5.3 (blink) System board The embedded controller times out waiting for the BIOS).

It does startup normally after couple of mins, but I dont know the reasons for the shutdowns

Did:

-Checked HP hardware test utility

-Cleaned vents and changed thermal paste to MX4

-Upgraded Bios

-Installed drivers from HP website

-Tried turning off turboboost by setting up Max proc usage in battery settings to 99%, and has by far less frequent shutdowns, but Max core frequency is limited to 2.19ghz, so I have freezes in games.

The temperatures are in between 75-95 mode during gaming and furmark testing with turboboost, avg 90.

Without turboboost the temps between 70-85, and can run furmark test almost twice longer than with turbo, but still it shutsdown in the end.

What could be the reason behind shutdowns and how can I mitigate it without sacrificing much of the laptop performance??

@Bayjoe

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, also change the video display settings to match the minimum display requirements for the game.

  1. Right-click an open space of the Windows desktop (not on an icon), and then click Display settings.
  2. Change the resolution to match the game’s recommended display settings. Recommended display settings can be found using an online search.
  3. Click OK to accept the change.
  4. If prompted, accept the new settings. The display reverts to the prior settings if the changes are not accepted.
  5. If prompted, select the option to restart the computer, and then try playing the game again.

For more information on how display settings can affect performance, go to Improving Video Game Performance or FPS (Windows 10).

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

There were only bluetooth and wifi driver updates.

Laptop still shutsdown even at lowest resolutions, and gives the same LED message.

Any other suggestions?

@Bayjoe

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to back up your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

The laptop has clean windows installation on new SSD drive. How could factory reset help?

The issue is shutdown, as if it s overheated, but it occurs even at 85 dgr celsius.

Shutdown follows up with Embedded controller time out LED message, but boots up properly after few mins.

It means that the battery in the laptop may be flat.

Try the following to see if you can get your laptop to start:

1. Disconnect the power adapter from the laptop.

2. Remove the battery pack from the laptop. This link shows you how to remove the battery

3. Press and hold the Power button on the laptop for 10 seconds.

4. Reconnect and switch on the power adapter to the laptop. Leave the battery out at this stage.

5. Try to start the laptop. If it starts allow it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop. Allow the HDD to settle (i.e. wait a few minutes)

6. Shutdown the laptop in the normal manner. mygroundbiz

7. When the laptop has completely shutdown, switch off the AC adapter and remove it from the laptop.

8. Re insert the battery pack into the laptop.

9. Reconnect and switch on the AC adapter.

10. Try to start your laptop. If it starts allow it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop.

11. Check the charging status of the battery. If it is charging allow it to fully charge before switching off the AC adapter and removing it from the laptop.

If the laptop doesn't start at Step 5. you either have a faulty AC adapter (and that is maybe why the battery went flat) or you need to check that the wall outlet is working correctly.
