I am contacting you regarding my HP Victus 16 laptop
I am experiencing a hardware issue where the screen and keyboard backlight turn off randomly, while the laptop itself continues running (system sound remains active). The issue occurs intermittently, both when the device is cold and when it is warm. In some cases, the display returns by itself; in others, a full power reset (disconnecting AC adapter and battery) is required.
The BIOS is fully updated, and the issue does not appear to be software-related.
I have submitted the laptop to a local service center for diagnostics. They informed me that the issue may be related to the GPU. However, based on the symptoms (intermittent display loss, system continuing to run, recovery after power reset), I would like to better understand whether this could also be related to:
GPU power delivery (power rail / VRM),
display backlight power circuit,
or a power control component (MOSFET / power IC) on the motherboard, rather than a complete GPU failure.
Before proceeding with any major repair or motherboard replacement, I would appreciate HP’s guidance on:
Whether these symptoms are known or documented for this model.
Whether HP recommends further diagnostics related to power delivery or GPU power management.
What repair options HP considers appropriate in such cases.
Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to your advice before making a final repair decision.

Hi @Grogi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are experiencing issues with your HP Victus 16, where the screen and keyboard backlight turn off randomly while the system continues running, which can be indicative of several potential causes. Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help resolve the problem:

Check for Loose Connections:

  • Inspect and reseat all internal cables related to the display to ensure they are securely connected.

Update Graphics Drivers:

Power Settings Review:

  • Review your power settings to ensure they are not contributing to the display shutdown. This includes checking Sleep settings and any display timeout settings in your power plan.

Conduct Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Utilize the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI to test for any hardware failures. Run system tests focusing on the graphics and display components to identify possible hardware issues.

Perform a Hard and Soft Reset:

  • Hard Reset: Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if possible), then hold down the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain any residual power. Reconnect everything and power on the laptop.

  • Soft Reset: Reset the system BIOS to default settings (you can do this by entering the BIOS setup during boot and choosing the restore defaults option).

Operating System Check:

  • Boot the laptop in Safe Mode to determine if the issue persists. This can help identify if third-party software or drivers are causing the problem.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello. Thanks for the advice. I followed all the advice but I couldn't solve the problem. None of the diagnostics found the problem. It shows that everything is fine. I sent the laptop to the service center but they couldn't find the problem either. The problem appeared right after the warranty expired so that creates an additional problem for me. What else can I do to solve this problem?

How much does it cost to replace the motherboard at HP service for my laptop?
