My laptop's screen and keyboard lights start randomly flickering and the screen turns black. I have to reopen the screen and unlock the computer again. This does not seem to be an overheating issue, as the product has been re-pasted very recently, and this happens when pc is idle, as well as when gaming.

Any suggestions?

Also, a full windows reinstall has also been performed and the problem persists. I have read somewhere that a faulty heat sensor may present this issue.

Hi @Alex12021

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry your HP Omen 16 is flickering and going black even after a full Windows reinstall and thermal repaste. That kind of unpredictable behavior—especially when idle or gaming—can be deeply disruptive.

Let’s walk through a focused set of steps to help isolate and stabilize the issue.

Step-by-step actions to address screen and keyboard flickering with blackouts

1. Update BIOS and system firmware

Outdated firmware can cause power state misbehavior and display instability.

  • Visit:
HP Omen 16 Drivers & BIOS
  • Enter your exact model and download:
    • BIOS Update
    • System Firmware
    • Chipset Driver
  • Install each update and restart your laptop.

These updates often include fixes for embedded controller and thermal sensor behavior.

2. Disable panel self-refresh and adaptive brightness

These features can cause flickering or black screens during idle or low-power states.

  1. Go to Intel Graphics Command Center or NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Disable Panel Self Refresh and Adaptive Brightness.
  3. Also check Windows Settings > System > Display > Brightness & color and turn off Change brightness automatically when lighting changes.

3. Run HP UEFI diagnostics

This checks for hardware faults including display, GPU, and sensors.

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press F2 repeatedly to enter HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  3. Run:
    • Display Test
    • System Board Test
    • Thermal Test

If any test fails or hangs, note the error code and let me know.

4. Check power and sleep settings

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
  2. Expand Display > Enable adaptive brightness and set both On battery and Plugged in to Off.
  3. Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set to Off.

5. Run the Diagnose & Fix tool

Let me know how the system behaves after these steps. If flickering persists, we can explore GPU driver rollback or external monitor testing next. You’ve done everything right by staying methodical—I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.
