OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-xd0000 (758R2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an HP OMEN 16-xd0xxx laptop and I'm facing a persistent issue with the Mediatek WiFi 6E MT7922 (RZ616) 160MHz network adapter. When I first connect to Wi-Fi, the speed is good, but after a few minutes, it drops drastically to around 2 Mbps. If I disable and re-enable the network adapter, the speed returns to normal briefly, but then drops again.

My router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and I've tried connecting to both—unfortunately, the issue persists on this laptop regardless of the band.

I've already disabled power-saving mode for the adapter and confirmed that the drivers are up to date. For reference, i have reset my router also but same problem so the problem appears to be specific to this laptop.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a reliable fix??

I understand your HP OMEN 16-xd0xxx is experiencing frequent Wi-Fi speed drops with the Mediatek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 adapter, even after updating drivers and disabling power-saving. Let’s go through detailed steps to troubleshoot this.

1. Check Wi-Fi Band & Channel Settings

Access your router settings and ensure your laptop is connecting to 5 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz, as 5 GHz is less congested.

Try changing the Wi-Fi channel on the router to a less crowded one (use channels 36, 40, 44, 48 for 5 GHz).

Disable Wi-Fi 6/6E settings temporarily to test if the adapter performs better on Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac).

2. Update or Rollback Network Drivers

Even if drivers appear up-to-date, Mediatek adapters sometimes perform better with specific driver versions.

Download the latest official Mediatek driver from HP Support for your exact OMEN 16 model.

If the latest driver doesn’t help, try rolling back to a previous version known to be stable.

3. Adjust Adapter Settings in Device Manager

Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Network adapters → Mediatek Wi-Fi 6E → Properties → Advanced.

Modify the following settings:

802.11n/ac/ax Mode: Set to Auto or Wi-Fi 5 only to test stability.

Channel Width for 5GHz: Set to Auto or 80 MHz instead of 160 MHz.

Roaming Aggressiveness: Set to Lowest.

U-APSD / Power Save Mode: Ensure it’s Disabled.

4. Disable Windows Features That Affect Wi-Fi

Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Advanced power settings.

Set Wireless Adapter Settings → Power Saving Mode → Maximum Performance.

Disable Wi-Fi Sense or Random Hardware Addresses in Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → Manage Known Networks → Properties.

5. Test with Static IP and DNS

Assign a static IP address to your laptop instead of DHCP.

Set DNS to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).

Sometimes Mediatek adapters experience DNS-related slowdowns when using automatic settings.

6. Check for Conflicting Software

Disable VPNs, firewalls, or network monitoring software temporarily.

Uninstall any third-party Wi-Fi management tools that might interfere with the Mediatek adapter.

7. BIOS & Firmware Updates

Ensure your laptop BIOS is up-to-date. Mediatek Wi-Fi 6E adapters sometimes rely on BIOS optimizations to function correctly.

Check HP Support for the latest OMEN 16 BIOS and firmware updates.

8. Temporary Workarounds

If the adapter continues to drop speeds:

Use a USB Wi-Fi 6 adapter temporarily for stable connections.

Connect via Ethernet if possible during gaming or heavy usage.

I hope this helps.

i have had this laptop since 2 months now. my previous router worked fine at 100mbps. It was Tp link Archer c50 which cappeda t 100mbps. I got a new one, TP LINK AX1500 V3.0. and now the speed on my laptop is under 6mbps at most. the same thing happens, when i restart the device, it is at the max 300 nearly. But 2mins later, its down to 6. When i reconnect the wifi, it stays at the same speeds. I need to either restart the router or the laptop entirely to get a brief 2min window of my top speed. How do i solve this? never had wifi issues until i upgraded my router. the router is wifi 6 and the laptop has wifi 6e. My android phone get 300mbps easily while its just beside the laptop. what could be the issue? How do i solve this? i Have tried all powershell commands to reset things but doesnt seem to work. If i changed it to wifi 5 in the settings and the rest of things you asked to, the speed falls to 0.10mbps.

Hi @luci07,

I understand your HP OMEN 16-xd0xxx laptop is experiencing Wi-Fi 6E speed drops with the Mediatek MT7922 adapter, especially after a few minutes of connection, while other devices maintain normal speeds. Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to stabilize your Wi-Fi.

Update Wi-Fi Adapter Drivers
 - Even if you think they are up to date, manually check HP Support or Mediatek’s official site for the latest MT7922 drivers.
 - Sometimes Windows Update does not have the absolute latest firmware for Wi-Fi 6E adapters.

Update Laptop BIOS
 - Go to HP Support > Software & Drivers > BIOS for your exact OMEN 16 model.
 - Updating BIOS can resolve intermittent Wi-Fi drops caused by adapter/firmware compatibility issues.

Disable 6 GHz Band (Wi-Fi 6E) Temporarily
 - Some MT7922 adapters experience instability on the 6 GHz band.
 - Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > MT7922 Properties > Advanced, and:
  - Disable 6 GHz Band / Wi-Fi 6E Mode.
 - Test stability on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

Change Router Settings
 - On your TP-Link AX1500 router:
  - Set 5 GHz band channel to a fixed channel (e.g., 36, 40, 44, 48) instead of Auto.
  - Disable DFS channels if enabled.
  - Make sure MU-MIMO / OFDMA is enabled.

Disable Bluetooth Coexistence
 - Some MT7922 Wi-Fi adapters share the same chip with Bluetooth.
 - Go to Device Manager > MT7922 > Advanced, and disable Bluetooth Collaboration / Coexistence.

Set Adapter Power Management
 - Go to Device Manager > MT7922 > Power Management tab.
 - Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
 - In Advanced tab, set Transmit Power to Highest.

Reset TCP/IP / Network Stack (If Needed)
 - Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
netsh int ip reset   netsh winsock reset   ipconfig /release   ipconfig /renew   ipconfig /flushdns
 - Restart the laptop.

Test Speed with Different Router Firmware
 - Some Wi-Fi 6E routers have firmware bugs causing MT7922 drops.
 - Check TP-Link for latest firmware and update it.

Check for Interference / Nearby Devices
 - Other Wi-Fi 6/6E devices or neighbors on the same channel can cause temporary drops.
 - Test in a different location or with router temporarily in another channel.

Temporary Workaround
 - If instability persists, consider:
  - Using 5 GHz Wi-Fi only, disabling 6E temporarily.
  - Using a USB Wi-Fi 6 dongle for stable connectivity until MT7922 driver updates arrive.

I hope this helps.

The issue, for some reason, is the Omen gaming hub. After a full day of tweaks nothing worked. As soon as i deleted the app, the speed hasnt dropped. The app NEEDS TO BE UPDATED IMMEDIATELY. THERE IS SOMETHINT WEONG WITH IT. IT WORKED FINE UNTIL I CHANGED MY ROUTER.
