This POS constantly shuts itself down no matter what im doing. What happens is, im just going about and it completly shuts down I've tried messing with the BIOS but that did nothing, I tried changing all my apps to run on my RTX GPU in settings and that did nothing and I really dont know what to do at this point. Is it because of GPU temp? my GPU 0 (the AMD) is at 45 degrees C and GPU 1(the RTX 4050) is at 46 degrees C with the fan running with just a few chrome tabs open.

Hi @Markkelly99,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does the shutdown happen suddenly (like power loss) or does Windows show a blue screen before restarting?
  • How often does this occur  every few minutes, or only after longer use?
  • Have you noticed if it happens more often when gaming or running heavier applications, or even during light use like browsing?
  • Is your laptop plugged in when this happens, or does it occur on battery as well?

Troubleshooting steps to try

  1. Check Windows Event Viewer
    • Press Win + X → select Event Viewer → look under Windows Logs > System for critical errors around the time of shutdown. This can reveal if it’s hardware, driver, or power-related.
  2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Run a System Test (especially memory and battery checks).
  3. Update BIOS and Drivers
    • Even though you’ve tried BIOS settings, make sure the BIOS itself is updated to the latest version from HP Support. Also update chipset, graphics, and power management drivers.
  4. Check Power Settings
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure your plan isn’t set to aggressive power saving. Try setting it to High Performance temporarily to see if it stabilizes.

I hope this helps.

It would do it fairly often and would happen suddenly, it was not a blue screen, it would happen usually when downloading things and so I uninstalled a 70GB program which freed up storage becuase I had around 4GBs left and now I havent seen it happen but I'll see ig because I thought I fixed it earlier after setting some programs to use my RTX cpu but I'll look at the power settings and bios and all that.

Thank you

Hi @Markkelly99,

Thanks for your response.

I completely understand about the  shutting down and restarting unexpectedly, especially when you’re in the middle of downloading or running large programs. It’s good to hear that freeing up storage space has improved things so far low disk space can sometimes cause instability, so that was a smart step.

Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try to make sure the issue doesn’t return:

  • Update BIOS and Drivers
Visit HP Support Assistant or the HP website to ensure your BIOS, chipset, and graphics drivers are fully up to date. Outdated firmware or drivers can cause sudden restarts.
  • Check Power Settings
In Windows, go to Control Panel → Power Options. Make sure your plan is set to Balanced or High Performance, and check advanced settings to ensure the system isn’t set to shut down or sleep unexpectedly.

     I hope this helps.

The way this happens is I think it works becuase it doesnt do the restarts for a day or two after I change some setting to try and fix it and then it does it agian but I looked at the Win+x event viewer and got a error: 0xC0000188 that shows as critical and have ran a couple things into the command prompt to try to fix it. Earlier, the restart happened while just trying to use chrome and now the fan is running despite only having a few things open.

I have disabled readyboot in the control panel so it should be good now but idk

I've tried everything I don't know what could possibly be wrong with this thing at this point its still doing it even after getting rid of readyboot

Hi @Markkelly99,

Thanks for your response.

I’m really sorry to hear how frustrating this has been for you.  You’ve clearly put in a lot of effort checking Event Viewer, running commands, and even disabling ReadyBoot so it’s understandable to feel stuck at this point.

The error code you mentioned, 0xC0000188, often relates to issues with the system’s performance logs. Disabling ReadyBoot was a good step, but since the problem persists, it may point to possibly a hardware-related concern.
