Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Hello, I have problems on my Victus 16 laptop.

The problems occurs every time the laptop is turned on, usually after around 20 minutes of low usage (internet, discord, ..., even when doing nothing) or very fast when launching a game.

The problem started around 1.5 month ago, it was very minor at first, the screen (and keyboard) would flicker once or twice then everything went back to normal, but now it flickers more then turns off, sometimes it isn't turned off but just on a very very low luminosity, less that what can be put with settings.

However, the computer itself works well, if I plug in a external monitor and keyboard, it works perfectly.

Since the keyboard also disconnects, the only way to turn off the computer is currently to cut it out of power (battery included).

I have installed and ran HP Diagnostic tools, they didn't find any errors.

I updated the Bios, didn't change a thing, resetting it to factory settings didn't help either.

I checked internal connections, didn't change anything.

I saw that the issue outcome to the same thing as disconnecting the keyboard connector (it does turn the screen off too), but it is well connected.

I saw on this forum some people having similar issues, never mentioning keyboard problems, and the support always gave solutions about BIOS, drivers, power settings, before going to private for more assistance, so I didn't find anything more I hadn't tried.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi @riggedup

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're facing this persistent flickering and keyboard disconnection on your Victus 16—it’s especially frustrating when the system works fine externally but the built-in display and keyboard become unusable.

Let’s walk through a few precise steps to help isolate and potentially resolve the issue.

What You’ve Observed

  • Flickering screen and keyboard that eventually go dark or unresponsive
  • External monitor and keyboard work fine
  • HP diagnostics and BIOS update didn’t help
  • Internal connections checked and reseated
  • Issue worsens under load or after idle time

This strongly suggests a hardware-level fault affecting the internal display and keyboard controller—possibly thermal, flex cable, or embedded controller related.

Steps to Further Isolate and Address the Issue

1. Run Component Tests from UEFI Diagnostics

Even if the Fast Test passed, run these deeper tests:

  • Turn off the laptop
  • Press Power, then immediately tap Esc
  • Press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
  • Run:
    • Display Test
    • Keyboard Test
    • System Extensive Test

Let the system run for at least 30 minutes to see if the flicker or shutdown occurs during diagnostics.

2. Disable Panel Self Refresh (Intel Graphics)

If your model uses Intel integrated graphics, disabling Panel Self Refresh can help:

  • Right-click desktop > Intel Graphics Command Center
  • Go to Display > Power
  • Disable Panel Self Refresh for both battery and plugged-in modes
  • Restart and observe behavior

3. Test in Safe Mode

This helps rule out driver or power management conflicts:

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, press Enter
  • Under Boot, check Safe boot > Minimal
  • Restart the system and observe if the flicker or keyboard loss still occurs

If the issue disappears in Safe Mode, it may be tied to a driver or background service.

4. Monitor Thermals and Power Behavior

Use OMEN Gaming Hub or HWMonitor to track:

  • CPU and GPU temperatures
  • Power draw and battery status
  • Fan speed behavior

If the flicker coincides with thermal spikes or power throttling, it may indicate a failing embedded controller or thermal sensor.

5. Try a Clean Boot

To rule out software conflicts:

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, press Enter
  • Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all
  • Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all startup items
  • Restart and test again

Let me know if you’d like help locating the service manual or checking your model’s embedded controller firmware.

You’ve already done an exceptional job narrowing this down—just a few more steps and we may be able to pinpoint the root cause.
