Who came up with the bright idea of excluding a NUMLOCK indicator LED from HP notebooks?

This is a ridiculouse design decision. I know if I mute the speaker, I know if I lock the CAPS but knowing the state of my NUMLOCK is unnecessary?

And it is not on by default when booting up. It retains whatever its last state was - which there is no way to tell. So when typing logon passwords you have to pay very close attention if the numbers in your password are being entered or not.

If you are not hearing impaired, the following will work for you.

No Caps / Num light on your keyboard?

Switch on the "tone" toggle to enable audio queues when Caps / Num / Scroll lock keys are used.

Windows key > Settings Ease of Access > (scroll down / select) Keyboard

Section Use Toggle Keys

Switch ON Play a sound whenever you press Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock

And (Optional)

Switch ON Turn on Toggle Keys by holding the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds

Thank you for the reply. However, this will only notify me when I have pressed the key. I already know that the key has been pressed, as well, I have pressed the key....  An audio notification of an action (which I already know I did), does not tell me the state of the number lock at any time, including when I hit the key.

This is not a solution, because I never know at any time whether or not the NUMLOCK is engaged when the key is pressed or at anyother time.

As I search it is clear that this has been a problem for years, that HP has decided not to ever acknowledge, address or resolve. Just awesome...

Understood.

You are, of course, welcome to reject the suggestion.  I understand that everyone's keyboard habits are different.

I do not discuss policy decisions - my opinion on this and any other subject is meaningless in the context of your satisfaction.
