Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

it was charging and working fine. Until it wasn’t . Tried powering it but I hear an electronic sound.(like a mosquito buzzing sound) Not exactly  a clicking sound. Light flashes on the power button and off.. doesn’t come on.. tried connecting it to power. Solid white shows up on the side meaning it’s fully charged. Tried turning on again.. this time both charging light and power light disappear shortly after the electronic sound. Help please

Hi @GatsbyBane

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds incredibly unsettling, and I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. You’ve described the symptoms so clearly—it’s like the laptop is trying to start but something’s holding it back. Let’s try a few steps that might help revive it:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the laptop from any external peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc.).
  • Remove the laptop's charger.
  • If your model allows, remove the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power from the device.
  • Reconnect the battery and the charger, then try turning on the device again.

Check the Power Adapter:

  • Ensure the power adapter and charging cable are working properly. Try using another compatible charger if available to eliminate the possibility of a faulty adapter.

Try a CMOS Reset

This can help if the system’s firmware is stuck:

  • Press and hold Windows + V, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Keep holding Windows + V for another 10–15 seconds, then release.
  • Watch for any blinking lights or beeps—those are signs the reset is working.

Inspect for Any External Damage:

  • Check for any visible damage on the charging port or power button that might be preventing power from reaching the system.

Use Battery Checking Software:

  • If your laptop starts after these steps, use HP Support Assistant to check the battery health and perform any recommended updates.

Try Booting Without the Battery:

  • If the laptop allows for battery removal, try operating the laptop with only the charger connected. This may help identify if the battery is at fault.

You’ve done a great job trying to troubleshoot already—let’s keep pushing to get it back up and running. Let me know what happens after these steps, and I’ll be right here to help with the next move.
