Hi @Cheeseits,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It’s unusual for your CPU to spike to 80°C on startup, especially after a fresh repaste by HP. Since it was stored for a month, here are some possible causes and solutions:

 Why This Might Be Happening

🔹 1. Dust or Moisture Accumulation

Even in storage, humidity or dust can affect thermal performance. It may have settled on the heatsink or fan blades, reducing efficiency.

🔹 2. BIOS or EC Firmware Glitch

After long storage, the Embedded Controller (EC) or BIOS may behave oddly, especially if the CMOS battery has drained slightly.

🔹 3. Background Processes on Boot

Windows 11 may be running updates, indexing, or telemetry tasks right after boot, causing high CPU usage and temps.

What You Can Try Now:

1. Reset BIOS and EC

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Hold Power + F2 (or just Power) for 30 seconds to reset EC.
  • Boot into BIOS (F10 on startup) → Load Default Settings → Save & Exit.

2. Clean Boot to Rule Out Software

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig.
  • Go to Services tab → Check Hide Microsoft Services → Disable all.
  • Go to Startup tab → Open Task Manager → Disable all startup items.
  • Restart and check temps.

3. Monitor Background Usage

Use Task Manager or HWInfo to check:

  • CPU usage at idle
  • Which processes spike at boot

4. Recheck Thermal Paste Contact

Even though HP repasted it, if the laptop was stored vertically or jostled, the heatsink contact might be uneven. If you're comfortable, you could:

  • Open the back panel
  • Check for proper heatsink pressure and fan movement

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
