Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution
HP Recommended

My HP omens power light briefly turns on when I click it for about 5 seconds before shutting back down. This happened yesterday but by looking through some boards I let it sit off of the charger for a few hours and got it working again. Today it did the same thing. Not sure what the issue is or if it's fixable. I disconnected the battery and tried it on just charger only and that didn't do anything different so not seeing how it could be a battery issue.

Hi @SolidSnack99,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Manjunath. Based on your description, this sounds like a hardware-level power delivery or embedded controller (EC) issue, especially since:

  • The laptop powers on briefly (5 seconds) and shuts down.
  • Disconnecting the battery and using AC power alone doesn’t change the behavior.
  • Letting it sit unplugged temporarily resolved it, once suggesting a capacitor discharge or EC reset helped.

Try These Steps to Narrow It Down

1. Perform an EC (Embedded Controller) Reset

This can clear power logic faults that cause boot loops.

Steps:

  1. Unplug the charger.
  2. Disconnect the battery (if removable or accessible).
  3. Hold the power button for 30–60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery and charger.
  5. Try powering on again.

2. Check for CMOS/RTC Battery Issues

A failing CMOS battery can cause power-on failures, especially after BIOS updates or long shutdowns.

  • If accessible, try reseating or replacing the CMOS battery.
  • Some OMEN models have a small coin-cell battery on the motherboard.

3. BIOS Recovery (if accessible)

If the BIOS was recently updated or corrupted:

  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold Power for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release all keys and wait for the BIOS recovery screen.

4. External Monitor Test

Just in case the system is booting but the display isn’t initializing:

  • Connect to an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C.
  • Power on and check for display output.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
