HP Gaming Pavilion - 15-cx0144tx
Microsoft Windows 11

My hp pavilion gaming laptop getting turned off automatically after pressing the power button. The led glows for about 3 seconds and sometimes even more and turns off.  It takes several attempts to get the laptop to boot. But when it boots up successfully there is no problem at all. I ran all the diagnostics (hardware  & Software) in hp diagnostics app and in UEFI  and all of them passed the tests.  The problem is only during the boot process. I also performed the hard reset but no use. Battery and AC adaptor also  passed  the tests.

Could it be due to faulty power button or  bios chip failure ? Please help.Screenshot (209).png

Hi @AVMY,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Excellent description and a great diagnosis. It is greatly appreciated.

If your HP Pavilion gaming laptop turns off automatically after pressing the power button, it could be due to several issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help identify and resolve the problem:

Power Supply and Battery Check:

  • Ensure that the power adapter is securely connected to both the laptop and the power outlet.
  • Try removing the battery (if it's removable) and powering the laptop using only the power adapter.
  • If the laptop stays on, the battery might be faulty and needs to be replaced.

Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if it's removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning on the laptop again.

Check for Overheating:

  • Ensure the laptop's cooling vents are not blocked and that the fans are working properly.
  • Clean any dust or debris from the vents using compressed air.
  • Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface to allow proper ventilation.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, etc.) and try turning on the laptop.
  • If the laptop turns on without any issues, one of the external devices may be causing the problem.
  • Reconnect the devices one by one to identify the problematic device.

BIOS Reset:

  • Enter the BIOS setup by pressing the appropriate key (usually F10, Esc, or Del) immediately after turning on the laptop.
  • Once in the BIOS, reset it to the default settings and save the changes.
  • Exit the BIOS and see if the laptop stays on.

Check for Software Issues:

  • If you can access the laptop before it turns off, check for any recent software changes or updates that may be causing the issue.
  • Run a virus scan to ensure no malware is affecting the system.
  • Boot into Safe Mode to see if the laptop stays on. If it does, the issue might be with a recently installed driver or software.

Run Diagnostics:

  • Use the built-in HP Hardware Diagnostics tool to check for hardware issues.
  • Turn off the laptop, then press the power button and immediately press Esc repeatedly to access the Startup Menu.
  • Press F2 to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the extensive system tests to identify any hardware problems.

Check Event Viewer:

  • If the laptop turns on for a brief period, check the Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings.
  • Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
  • Look under Windows Logs > System for any critical errors or warnings that coincide with the shutdowns.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, it might indicate a more serious hardware issue, such as a failing motherboard or power supply. In this case, contacting HP Support or taking the laptop to an authorized service center for further diagnosis and repair is advisable.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
