OMEN by HP - 17-an113nm

I already know that asking for admin passwords is against TOS and the question will get shut down, but after already messaging support and waiting for their response I've decided to ask here as well.

I used BIOS settings normally for years of owning this PC, but yesterday for the first time after trying to activate hardware virtualization for a video game I was met with my BIOS settings being locked behind an Administrator password. I never set one nor do I remember any that came with the laptop, but I'd like to know what could've caused this in the first place.

My Omen worked normally (other than small cmd edits due to buggy Win updates), so the sudden change left me questioning everything I've downloaded and done on the PC. The only possibility that crossed my mind is the overall age of the computer (battery needs to be switched, lack of RAM, indecent taking care of over time, lack of updates...).

Is there a particular reason BIOS would suddenly lock itself after working normally for over 5 years, or is this a sign to get a new device?

Replies appreciated!

Hi AM0R4L

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are facing an issue with your computer, I am glad to assist you today.

It’s understandably concerning to encounter an unexpected BIOS password issue after years of using your PC without any such problem. Here are some potential reasons why this might have happened and steps you can take:

Possible Causes:

Firmware Update:

  • Sometimes, a BIOS or firmware update can introduce new security features or reset configurations, which might include enabling or requiring a password. If the update was applied automatically or without your direct knowledge, it could be a factor.

Power Loss or CMOS Battery Failure:

  • If the CMOS battery (which stores BIOS settings) is failing or has completely discharged, it might cause unexpected changes or require a password if settings have been reset. This could potentially lock the BIOS if it’s part of a security feature.

System or Security Software:

  • Certain security software or system management tools can prompt for BIOS passwords as a way of securing the system. It’s possible that such a tool was installed or updated and inadvertently set a BIOS password.

Malware or Unauthorized Access:

  • While less common, malware or unauthorized users could potentially set a BIOS password. It’s a good practice to run a comprehensive malware scan to rule out this possibility.

Accidental or Unknown Setting Change:

  • There’s a possibility that the BIOS password was set accidentally or unknowingly. Some systems might prompt for a password if certain settings are changed, particularly if they involve security or virtualization features.

Steps to Address the Issue:

Check Documentation and Support:

  • Review any documentation or support information for your HP Omen. Sometimes, default passwords or recovery methods are mentioned there. Additionally, consult HP’s official support channels for guidance.

Clear CMOS:

  • Reset BIOS Settings: You can try clearing the CMOS by removing the battery on the motherboard (if you're comfortable doing this) or using a jumper (if applicable). This can sometimes reset the BIOS to default settings and remove the password.
  • Consult Manual: Check your laptop’s manual or HP’s website for instructions specific to your model.

Contact HP Support:

  • Since you’ve already reached out to support, continue following up with them. They may have specific procedures for resetting or recovering a BIOS password for your laptop model.

Run Diagnostics:

  • Run a full system diagnostic to ensure there are no other underlying issues affecting your system. This can be done through HP’s diagnostic tools or a third-party utility.

Professional Assistance:

  • If you are unable to resolve the issue through the above steps, consider seeking help from a professional technician. They might have the tools and expertise needed to reset or recover the BIOS password.

Consider Upgrading:

  • If the laptop is showing signs of age (e.g., needing a battery replacement, insufficient RAM), it might be worth considering an upgrade. A new device could provide better performance and reliability, especially if the current one is starting to experience multiple issues.

Preventive Measures:

  • Regular Maintenance: Ensure regular maintenance of your laptop, including keeping BIOS and firmware updated and replacing the CMOS battery as needed.
  • Backup Important Data: Regularly back up your data to avoid potential data loss in case of hardware issues.

Addressing the BIOS password issue promptly and systematically will help in determining whether it’s an isolated problem or indicative of a more significant issue. If you follow these steps and still face difficulties, professional support or a device upgrade may be necessary.
