Since I purchased it nearly a year ago, my laptop sometimes experiences sudden sporadic lag that affects the entire system, significantly slowing down its performance before resolving itself. Considering my memory, CPU, and other components performing well, this issue disrupts my gaming and work activities, causing notable delays in basic tasks such as typing and moving the mouse. The lag appears unexpectedly and persists sporadically, making it very frustrating to deal with.

Hi @Marco198,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
Sporadic system lags on a Victus by HP 15.6 Inch Gaming Laptop can be quite disruptive, especially if it affects both gaming and work activities. Since your components (memory, CPU, etc.) seem to be performing well otherwise, there are a few steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue.
1. Check for Malware and Viruses
- Run a full system scan: Use a reputable antivirus program to scan for malware and viruses that could be causing the lag.
2. Update Drivers
- Update all drivers: Ensure all your drivers, especially graphics, chipset, and network drivers, are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP support website.
3. Check for Software Conflicts
- Review recent software installations: Uninstall any recently added programs that might conflict with system performance.
- Disable startup programs: Use Task Manager to disable unnecessary startup programs that could be consuming resources.
4. Monitor System Resources
- Task Manager: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and monitor the CPU, memory, disk, and GPU usage when the lag occurs. This can help identify any resource hogs.
- Resource Monitor: For more detailed analysis, use Resource Monitor (search for it in the Start menu).
5. Check for Thermal Issues
- Monitor temperatures: Use software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures. Overheating can cause thermal throttling, leading to lag.
- Clean your laptop: Ensure that the vents and fans are clean and not obstructed. Consider using compressed air to clean out dust.
6. Update BIOS and Firmware
- Update BIOS: Visit the HP support website to check if there is a BIOS update available for your model. Follow the instructions carefully to update it.
Kindly find the next set of steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi @Marco198,
Please afind the next set of steps below.
7. Power Settings
- Adjust power settings: Ensure your laptop is set to "High performance" in the power settings. Go to Control Panel > Power Options to adjust this.
8. Check Storage Health
- Check for disk errors: Use tools like CrystalDiskInfo to check the health of your storage drive. Run "chkdsk" from Command Prompt to check for and fix file system errors.
9. Manage Background Processes
- Limit background processes: Use Task Manager to identify and close unnecessary background processes that could be consuming resources.
10. Perform a Clean Boot
- Clean boot: Perform a clean boot to start Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This can help identify if background programs are causing the issue.
11. Reinstall Windows
- Reset Windows: If all else fails, consider performing a clean installation of Windows to eliminate any software-related issues. Ensure you back up your data before doing this.
12. Hardware Diagnostics
- HP Hardware Diagnostics: Run HP's built-in hardware diagnostics tools to check for any underlying hardware issues.
If the issue persists after trying these steps, it might be worth it as this could be a hardware issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
