Omen Laptop HP-17-w224tx
Linux

Hi,

I have just purchased an OMEN laptop.

On power off, occassionally the keyboard remains lit with the caps lock white led flashing 5 long and 3 short pulses.

Pressing the power button then shuts down the laptop.

There does not appear to be any problems, but I'm curious as to what the flashing caps lock means.

Thanks.

Hi,

All system checks passed. I then  contacted HP Premium Support.

Shree Gowri responded and fixed the problem by talking me through updating the BIOS for my laptop.

The laptop shuts down correctly now when using Windows or Linux.

She also helped me install the audio driver as the audio stopped intermittently and the headphone jack was not working.

Everything working perfectly now!

Excellent support from Shree.

I will close the call

Greetings @MungoMan,

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that your computer is not booting and the capslock LED is flashing 5 long then 3 short times, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.

Do you have external devices connected to your computer?

Request you to refer to this HP Article and based on the sequence mentioned looks like the system board needs to be replaced.

Recommend you contact our phone support to check on the service options available for your computer.

Keep me posted.

Thanks for your response.

The CapsLock LED flashing occurs when powering off, not booting and no external devices (apart from charger) is attached.

Currently I am performing the HP diagnostics. May take a day to complete! I will post results to you when completed.

(Quick and Fast tests passed so far)

I checked your article re CapsLock LED  sequence and it appears to be for booting. Does the same sequence apply when powering off?

I am running Linux with secure mode turned off, don't think this is part of the problem.

Interesting that the problem only happens occassionally (25%?) on poweroff.

Is there any other tasks I should perform before contacting HP phone support?

Thanks again.
