Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Microsoft Windows 11

So my laptop for the last couple of weeks has decided to shut itself down while plugged in, not doing anything fancy or gaming, just generic stuff. It's not the charger, bought a new one (same exact one). The battery works fine when not plugged in and I can do whatever I want. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @TessiesDad,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your HP laptop shutting down unexpectedly when plugged in, despite using a new charger. There could be several reasons for this behavior, and here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

  1. Check Power Settings:

    • Make sure your power settings are configured correctly. Go to "Power Options" in the Control Panel and ensure that your laptop is set to run at maximum performance while plugged in.
  2. Update Drivers:

    • Ensure that all your drivers are up to date, especially graphics and chipset drivers. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause stability issues.
  3. Overheating:

    • Check if your laptop is overheating. Overheating can cause automatic shutdowns to prevent damage. Clean any dust from the cooling vents, and consider using a cooling pad to help dissipate heat.
  4. Event Viewer:

    • Check the Windows Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings around the time of the shutdown. This may provide clues about what is causing the issue.
  5. Battery Health:

    • Although you mentioned the battery works fine when not plugged in, it's still worth checking the battery health using HP's diagnostic tools or third-party software to ensure there are no issues.
  6. BIOS/UEFI Update:

    • Check if there are any BIOS/UEFI updates available for your laptop on the HP support website. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve power-related issues.
  7. Power Supply Issues:

    • While you've already replaced the charger, there might be an issue with the power jack on your laptop. If the power jack is loose or damaged, it could result in intermittent power supply issues.
  8. Windows Updates:

    • Ensure that your operating system is up to date with the latest Windows updates.
  9. Hardware Diagnostics:

    • Run hardware diagnostics provided by HP. Many HP laptops have built-in diagnostics that can help identify hardware issues.
  10. System Restore:

    • If the issue started after a recent software change or update, you might consider using System Restore to revert your system to a point before the problem began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
